Also, can you explain from those links why users switched over from Cubase to something else? State a reason why producers should use cubase 7 to make tracks (not mix or record)? The features you copied from gearslutz is from a cubase fanboy. Kinda sad you had a cubase user photoshop on how the cubase 7 channel strip should look. Most of the users agreed with that. i just found something.

if i right click project - add instrument track - select VST from pulldown - there is no crash!

now i can play around at least.. lol.. this makes it seem less dire - it is to do with simply selecting the VST and the 'Create Track' function. not a deep audio issue of any kind.

Hey Ford, sorry your having trouble. I was actually going to purchase cubase 7, yesterday but was disappointed on the things I've read. Can you elaborate on what your frustrations have been? I almost dropped $500 on it. I don't wanna be a beta tester. I've never seen so many complaints on a program's first version that I can remember. Thanks!

i still am confused. my basic complaint is that i wanted the upgrade from 6.5 to be easy. i only purchased 6 and then 6.5 recently and it felt a tad soon to charge $150 for a .5 release. the download took longer than any download in my recent memory. 2 gig over 2 hours. so i was up late and as soon as i install it i get a hang every time i load a VST to the point that Win 7 BSODs trying to shut down..

now i see that it is clearly going to work on my machine, but this seems like the most buggy Cubase release i have ever used. lots of people have problems. some people have it running fine. i wish that i knew for sure why i have this bug - it may be my update path and the previous CS4 and C6.5 versions still installed, but i am done guessing for now.

Sorry ford for the troubles. I've been their with sonar years ago. Maybe Marcus could help you out with this? Try tomorrow And call it might.

I find it always best to wait when a new version of Cubase is released AND the OS is updated.


Let some time pass (4 months+) for the bugs to be fixed.

Just to chime in the strong "Cubase vs Studio One" debate...

I've been using Cubase since the SL/SX2 days (without counting the Atari ones) and I'll probably upgrade to 7, no matter what the competition is offering. Why ? Simply because Cubase is the only one offering in one package the followings :

- A quite complete score editor
- Input tracks
- Input transformer (real time MIDI messages shifting)
- External instrument management as VSTis
- An inspiring and sober interface with a clear view of what is audio and MIDI (Reaper and Samplitude, anyone ?)
- Musical/linear timebase switch (essential for fixing a tempo to a freely played improvisation).

These alone make me stick to Cubase. And, as there is now a new mixer interface which seems to be a major improvement, this with a new Remote Control Editor, I'm enticed to upgrade at any time and am just looking at the first reports from users before proceeding. They seem to be contrasted, indeed, but even so, I know that I can still use 6.5 until the first fixes in january will be at my disposal. So, yes, I am not very pleased to see that the windows management is the same as it was, among others, but still : I ponder the whole thing and always keep in mind what I have listed previously.

To each his/her own...

About the OP question and troubles, there must be something going wrong with his setup : Steiny would never have take the risk of releasing a major version of their flagship product unable to load plug-ins in their own format...

There is a pre-release for the first maintenance update announced for Dec 19th and a new eLicenser version will be available next week... so let's see if this solves some of the problems.

Indeed, but well... There are hosts that allow you this in a more or less convenient way. I don't think it's a nonsense : the point is to choose which host will allow you to achieve what you are expecting in the quickest way. It's already difficult enough to make inspiration or mood concrete and the host used have to be as flexible as possible for this : in other words, the best host is the one that allows you to quickly put in tracks what is coming in your head and soul without bothering about limitations and workarounds. I already explain why I stick with Cubase, but I understand that it could not suits for others...

The unstability of Cubase on my highly optimized and rock solid stable system (xp sp3, can run flawlessly for weeks without turning off to reboot) was the main reason i switched to REAPER.
Looks like that problem is still present.
Good to know that even after all these years and so many new Cubase versions, the decision to drop Cubase was and still is the right choice.

Thanks for your advice - it's working for me.
VST selection with F11 creates always a short dump.

My old ilok1 software Motu Mach5 Version1 is running without problems.

I got C7 last night and installed it successfully. Initial startup choked on scanning the 32bit MDA plugins, but I took them out of my FX folder and tried again. Since then, everything has worked without a hiccup.

I mention this because it seems like the OP might have something similar wreaking havoc.

Anyway, aside from that, I'm a little disappointed in the mixer view. I love the new functionality of it, but it's visually soft. Like if I were using a monitor at a lower than optimal resolution. This seems odd, since all the videos and screen shots I've seen make it look nice and crisp.

I actually had a similar issue with the mixer in the Harrison Mixbus, so maybe it's just something with my setup.


Anyway, hope the OP gets his issues sorted.

Yeah, I can't say the mixer looks "soft" here; it's contrast and clarity is pretty good. If anything, it could look a tad less "cartoony", maybe. But I'm getting quite used to it. Big fan of the workflow.
