I somehow managed to get it running with A4A now, but it's very random. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. WASAPI has always worked for me, in any other application...

Great news - the sfz2.0 engine that Plogue has been providing to support a variety of commercial sampler products (e.g. the Garritan libraries) has been released as a standalone player!

I've been using it for a little while and it seems rock solid (as you'd expect, it's a mature product) and runs the large drum sample library mappings I'm working on really well. This is a player I'm happy to say does René's ideas proud.

Not only that, they're throwing in a free sample bank too - I can't comment on them as I've not listened to them.
I haven't played with it yet, but based on what I know of the Plogue engine (Aria is based on it too, isn't it?), it looks like we have the new gold standard SFZ player--and for free! This is really great news!

(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

Thanks. All ARIA converters are separate exe's to protect the host from crashing. Maybe the method I use to call external apps gives wine some headaches. Does it crahs for every sf2 files? If its a specific file, please send it over (somehow).

Just installed it and played around with it. It's awesome! I was waiting for a good sfz player for a long time, since the only good ones available until now had some serious issues.

My first impression:

+ wonderful GUI (esp. the dedicated interface for the free library sounds)

+ nice additional options and controls, not available in any other sfz Player

+ the free sound library is really great, I love the Steinway, but also all the other sounds (some of them have been available before, but without a dedicated interface)

One question:
I have set the user file path to the directory where all my SFZ's stay. I can load them manually without problems, but is there a way to make them appear in the file browser of Sforzando (just like the free library)?

Thanks a lot for this Christmas gift to plogue and the sound designers involved in the free library. This will be my preferred SFZ player from now on!

All sf2 make it crash. And if I try a gig file (not supported, I know), the warning window also freezes. Not a big deal for me.
Something more exciting : drag and drop WORKS from Linux to wine. That's great, really.
You can't always get what you waaaant...

If you set the "User files path" path on the settings tab, the file menu should be updated with a "User" entry, and this should be there when you restart as well.

Now it's working (took me a 2nd attempt): the "User file path" does now appear in Sforzandos file browser!!!

I just realised that "sf2" files can also be imported and automatically converted to "sfz" , another great feature.
