I got an Xmas present that would just cover the exact amount needed to buy Auria, Should I just buy Auria, or use it toward the purchase of Logic? (I have some fantasy football winnings coming my way) I don't have a fully featured computer DAW. I have an iPad 2 and will get an iPhone 5 soon, and a 17" MBP.

IPad apps that I already have:
GarageBand
Korg iMS-20, iPolysix, and iKaosillator
NLog Synth Pro
Sunrizer
Animoog
Magellan
Little midi machine
Jam up pro
Drum Jam
Audiobus
Multitrack DAW

With all that, I can create some pretty good sounding stuff. Multitrack DAW is easy to use and get a song to the point where it sounds good, but lacks the finishing touches.

Auria seems like a beast, but will I get to the same point of, "Hey this sounds great, but if I could only just..." And then need to drop a bunch of extra cash anyway?

I think I'm talking myself into buying Logic. Using the computer seems like a chore now though. :)

So spoiled!

FWIW, most of the stuff I write is either electronic, trance, psychedelic, sludge metal, death metal, thrash metal, or a mash up of any or all of those. I also could see myself doing some quiet, spacey sort of ambient stuff too. These iPad synths are amazing.

You guys rock too, btw!

I'd say go for a real DAW if you haven't got one and have to choose. That will probably evolve your music making most. Great to have the iPad as a scratchpad, now with audiobus more than ever, but exporting those projects into a real DAW still feels necessary for me at least to really make finished tracks.

Logic can import garageband projects if you use that a lot, but there's also Cubasis now for the iPad, which can export projects into Cubase. I got Auria when it was on sale and it looks great and works great for audio tracks, but Cubasis have both audio and MIDI which is a huge advantage. There's lots of stuff missing still but it's the most usable iPad DAW on the market right now, IMO. And Steinberg have promised to update it frequently.

If you want to do spacey, ambient stuff, get Samplr and Borderlands too, cheap and great apps, especially Samplr.

i would say it depends what you prefer.i love logic and bought 2 ipads some months ago cause i was thinking to use both at the same time with logic.More as external instruments and midicontrollers. But i figured out now that i'm doing much less at the computer then ever before :) But maybe i'm just tired of using mouse/keyboard as an interface after so many years although its still the faster way to produce.I'm thinking to sell both ipads again to get an ipad 4 now :)

Maybe you can hold out a little longer?I don't give up hope that apple releases a logic lite for ipad sooner or later.
Anyway, both are great products (i'm using auria as well). If you have no recording software for your MBP at all, maybe you should go for logic first. But it is definitely possible to produce quality stuff just with an ipad, its not necessary to see it only as a sketchpad. It's just a bit more work.Yet!

Btw, the main reason that I'm considering Logic is that my Xmas present is a fifty usd g-card for I Tunes. That's good for ipad apps and Mac apps. I was trying to type that out in my OP, but it kept accusing me of spam. I've used GarageBand on the Mac, which is ok. But I enjoy using GB on the ipad much more, just because swiping, pinching, etc. is so much more intuitive and fluid than clicking and dragging (and hoping you stop at the right spot) and hitting keys. I really like Multitrack DAW for the same reasons. It's so easy to edit everything with the touchscreen. But it lacks the necessary features to make a more refined final product.

I was thinking that I could just keep using MDAW and then import it into Logic to put on the finishing touches. But it looks like that import step would be a bit clunky. I'd have to mix each track down to wav individually, unless there's an easier way to do it that I have not discovered.

Cubasis interests me, but it sounds like cubasis lacks the necessary features to put on those finishing touches, and that ultimately you would import it into Cubase to do that. I don't know how much extra cash that would mean. If it went on sale, I might get it.

Auria sounds like it is capable of exporting to a format that several major DAWs can handle, so I do like that.

I watched some videos about macros in the Logic environment, over in the Hosts forum. That is really cool and it is the kind of stuff I could nerd out on for a long time, I'm a software engineer by trade, so it really appeals to me.

Once again, it looks like I'm talking myself into Logic! :) I'm really leaning that way, just so I can have at least one full blown toolset.

Then I'll probably get tired of clicking and buy Auria later, or Logic Lite if that ever happens.

I have ipad3 and all the apps you mentioned excluding cubase. My thinking went along the same lines as yours that I needed a computer based daw and so after some research I got reason 6.5 which I love. I also have auria and a bunch of the plug ins which is awesome.

I hace noticed that i can rarely be bothered to fire up reason preferring to use the iPad. And when I do fire it up, the number of times I just want to touch the computer screen to change something, realise I have to use the mouse and tut loudly is comical! So I do love reason, but working in touch screen on the ipad is just so much easier. Most of the time. :)

get logic

will take your stuff to another level if you put the time into it

nothing wrong with ipad...you can get a lot done with it.....but not close to what can be done in a fully featured daw

the thing is, even if the apps allow all the functions it is just not set up to use in the same way

of course there are trade-offs on both sides.....the tactile nature of the ipad is great, but it is a 9.-whatever inch environment...this is one issue...the other is that using a screen for long hours in a position other than in front of you, at eye level, could lead to other, non-equipment issues

you could always use your ipad as a mouse controller, or use it with any of the other controller-like apps to make the computer experience much more tactile

and keep using the ipad as something to capture inspiration anywhere you are, and making loops etc to build upon in logic

i can make good music on a tablet or a phone, but i can't make the music i want to make...if i squeeze myself into the conventions, i can come up with good results...my dablings with nanostudio were great, considering it was on an ipod - which when you think about it is pretty mind blowing - but it took 4 time as long and didn;t allow me to do 5% of what i would have liked to had i been using logic

Or look at splashtop and use logic on your ipad .....

Logic all the way.
As neat as iOS music apps are- you are dealing with early gen limitations (which will of course get better as Apple releases newer tech).
BUT, If you can wait- might be worth it- I know they will charge for their next version of Logic- which seems like it will be in 2013 sometime.

If you are looking for a slew of new softsynths though- look at Apple MainStage- for the price- it's a no brainer for what you get with it.

I vote get logic. That being said, you'll eventually want ALL the iPad apps also.

Thanks for all the responses guys! I'm definitely thinking Logic is the way to go. I'll probably check out V-control at some point, once I get sick of clicking :)

I also bought Samplr too, thanks olja for the recommendation. It is totally wicked and I haven't even scratched the surface with it yet.
