recording and monitoring audio tracks problem

i've been recording some guitar tonight on mulab and can't see how the software can be made to work like a multitrack audio recorder. i cannot see any way of setting up the routing to record a track, then record another track while monitoring the first and having the recorded tracks play through individual racks as i record them. it looks to me like it needs a 'record' button on the racks to switch between 'armed to record' tracks and monitor tracks. i tried to create a multitrack template in the mux but couldn't see how to achieve this.
i've mentioned this before and it should be something that is easy to do but it isn't, as far as i can see, and it is a problem in this otherwise fantastic software. it should be extremely easy and intuitive to achieve this basic function in a daw.
i also found it hard to achieve crossfades in audio loops. can something be done to create auto crossfades when creating loops to avoid clicks?
i would like to move away from using ableton for audio recording and use mulab for everything, but at the moment i am unable to use mulab for recording external audio for above reasons.

having a look at this again this morning and a simple solution would be to have a fourth option when you click '+' in the left hand rack column. at present it has following options:'Add Instrument Track','Add Audio Track' or 'Add Track'. A fourth option of 'Add Audio Record Track' that automatically created a corresponding rack at the bottom, like the other 3 options do, would solve the problem and make recording audio extremely easy and intuitive.
It would also open up the software to guitarists and likes who want to easily record external sources and instruments with the built in high quality effects.

the mux is a lot like logic's environment that i had to get to know when using logic years back, but i never had a situation when i couldn't create a logic environment that could do what i wanted or could find online a ready made environment that worked. it's a shame audio record has been neglected cos i want to recommend mulab to people i know who don't just use virtual instruments but record external stuff. as it stands it isn't set up to do this and i cannot recommend it for this purpose.
as an example, my brother just bought a boss multitracker that also works as an audio interface. i put the demo of mulab on his computer and was showing him it but soon realised that the inherent advantages of recording and editing audio on a computer, rather than on a small screen multitracker, weren't being realised in mulab as it stands and there was no point in taking it further with him. it's fantastic for virtual instruments but is lacking in both the recording and the audio editing of recordings of external instruments.

It's a bit non intuitive.
The way to record multiple tracks is to right click the audiobutton on the right of the record button to open the Audio Recording Setup.
Press the "+" button as many times you need record tracks.
Give each recording a name and set the Record From,Channels and auto Normalize.
The tricky thing is two fold:
1) Monitor your recording, yes or no. Beware of feedback if you choose to monitor. You can setup a rack for each monitoring and build monitor mixes if needed.
2) Even if you don't setup monitor racks or audio tracks, as soon as you record, all created Audio Recorders will record the inputs!
When recording stops, you will see the added track, which are all routed to the main audio out. So, you have to create racks and route the audio tracks to these racks to be able to mix them.
Conclusion: It can be dead simple if you don't need monitoring. Just fill the Audio Recording Setup. Everything will be recorded (btw, the same for midi)!
Monitoring and mixing setup needs a bit more work.
If you are in doubt, check the Session MUX!
It can be extremely flexible with pre-recording effects for each recording track, any monitoring setup you could imagine...

"on the left of the record button" you mean, right?AndreasD wrote:The way to record multiple tracks is to right click the audiobutton on the right of the record button
You mean feedback because the input may also come on the speakers and so it's travelling back into the mic? If that's the feedback you mean then that's a tricky thing in any recording situation, even before DAWs exist. The tricky thing is two fold:
1) Monitor your recording, yes or no. Beware of feedback if you choose to monitor.
Unless you disarm them, like in any DAW.2) Even if you don't setup monitor racks or audio tracks, as soon as you record, all created Audio Recorders will record the inputs!
They're routed to the monitor out. If that was set to none, then indeed the resulting new track is routed to the main out by default. That can be easily changed of course. When recording stops, you will see the added track, which are all routed to the main audio out.

As Andreas wrote, all setting up audio recording is indeed done via a right-click on the record audio button. You can assign a shortcut to this function if you want.plutonia wrote:i've been recording some guitar tonight on mulab and can't see how the software can be made to work like a multitrack audio recorder. i cannot see any way of setting up the routing to record a track, then record another track while monitoring the first and having the recorded tracks play through individual racks as i record them.
The dialog that appears then can be compared as setting up audio recording tracks in more traditional DAWs.
The red 'Arm' LED at the very left can be switched on/off so you can easily select what to record in a certain take, very much like in traditional DAWs.

I agree with this expression.> DiGiT < wrote:i agree it could be easier or at least appear easier.
I think it's all not that complex as it may look, i guess the biggest difficulty is that it is done in a non traditional way. Hopefuly the exlanations above clarifies things. I'll also search for improvement for future versions.

The functionality you describe is already there: Add Audio Track, without choosing an audio file i.e. leave it empty. But then there is no link yet with audio recording, right?plutonia wrote:having a look at this again this morning and a simple solution would be to have a fourth option when you click '+' in the left hand rack column. at present it has following options:'Add Instrument Track','Add Audio Track' or 'Add Track'. Anyway, i've been thinking in a similar way: To step towards a more traditional way, a track could be linked to an audio recorder, and show the Arm button in the track header, and popping up the audio recorder editor from there so to make changes. Then we could indeed add an "Add Audio Recorder Track" in that menu and then select one of the existing audio recorders or add a new one.
Maybe that's a more 'intuitive' way of doing it than using the separate "Audio Recording Setup" panel. It's an interesting tinking path, but i'm not yet thru with it. I'll think more on this, and eventually post a screenshot to make things more concrete. But i also still have some work to do in finalizing M5.

ok. thanks for feedback jo. much appreciated. if implemented this change in functionality could gain more users of mulab, which would be great.mutools wrote:The functionality you describe is already there: Add Audio Track, without choosing an audio file i.e. leave it empty. on another topic was using muzzy's to remix an old song a few days back but found that i no longer have the sample pack by electrokabn dj nico (broken hard disk way back and lost loadsa stuff including these samples) i wonder if anyone still has this sample pack so that i can remix some old tunes i did in muzzy's? if anyone has that would be great.

Juan has shared the EBCN library also with MuLab & MUX users. So feel free to upload it, that will be the most instant way at this point. I will also share it via mutools.com one day and/or integrate it into the factory library. Big Thanks again to Juan!! Cheers!
