Scroll down to where it talks about the 808 kick. I think in my practice, based on the description of the oscillator, I used an FMO.

A 'banging' 808 would require fx.

I always thought the 909 was one of the shittiest sounding drum machines ever (that's going all the way back to release). Never have understood the popularity.

I like them all please share your insight :)

I had one in the eighties, the actual machine had a couple of knobs to dial in the tuning, pitch and "click" of the kick (or something like that)... and separate outs. You could send a healthy, isolated kick to the house and really shake timbers.

Mostly, i remember being jealous of the Linn-drum guys... my 909 was so old fashioned and the sounds sounded boring after a while.

I'm still bored with the sounds, they are easily recreated with one oscillator and a bit of filter envelope work.

There are a few examples hidden deep in the Zebra Patch trove : http://www.u-he.com/PatchLib/zebra.html

Dig 'em out and see how they tick.
Retired, Bored and ready to WRECK the JOINT... gonna drop some OLD-STEP, ya'll!!
