I've got the iPad 4 and the lightning to camera adapter which I use with the Scarlett 2i2 also. I just use a Belkin powered (4 port) USB hub which I plug into the camera adapter, then plug the Scarlett into the hub. Another great addition to this setup for mobile sketchpad work is the Akai LPD8, LPK25 or MPKmini keyboard. They're all class compliant small format MIDI controllers so you can just plug them into the hub also and they work just fine with most music apps. Add in your microphone of choice and a small stand and you've got yourself an excellent recording/MIDI production rig that you can fit into a backpack. :D

Will have to try that one. I use a 7 port powered hub my 2i2 is plugged into on my laptop. Didn't know the 2i2 was class compliant. Cool. I just got a Venom synth too which has class compliant interface built in.

This is great stuff.

I would just like to confirm that the Focusrite 2i4 works with the iPad 4 using the lightning to usb adapter and a powered usb hub!

I noticed that a couple of people on this thread have managed to use Focusrite Scarlett USB interfaces with the iPad. I was wondering if any of those could confirm that a setup like the following works for them:

iPhone 5 --> lightning-to-USB adapter --> powered USB hub --> Focusrite

That was my main question. I also had a less pressing question, namely are people using the standard lightning-to-USB cable or the lightning-to-USB Camera connection kit, and whether that makes a crucial difference.

Thanks for any clarification.

I don't have an ipad4 (yet), still on my ipad2, but I just got the alesis io4 this week and it works perfectly through a generic cck, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work with ipad4. It needs to be plugged in with it's wall wart, but no hub or anything needed. My novation xio also works perfectly with the same cck. Hopefully that helps somewhat.

Thanks for your response, mrufino. However, I was asking about using an iPhone 5. Your iPad 2 has a 30-pin interface, which for me would introduce an extra adapter. (Also, I'd think it would be easier to find audio interfaces compatible with 30-pin.)

I realize that my question from two posts ago might be a slight digression from the topic of the thread (the iPad 4). But it may be somewhat relevant in that the iPhone 5, like the iPad 4, has a lightning port. I'm trying to get a handle on that, since I've read conflicting reports. So to clarify, my question was about the following hypothetical:

iPhone 5 --> lightning-to-USB adapter --> powered USB hub --> Focusrite.

PS: One reason I posted in this topic is because people had reported some success with Focusrite Scarlett USB audio interfaces, since that's what I'm contemplating. However, even if nobody has tried a Scarlett with an iPhone 5, I think it would also be illuminating if anyone could share an experience with something like
iPhone 5 --> lightning-to-USB adapter --> powered USB hub --> [an arbitrary USB audio interface or even a USB DAC].

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I was replying to the original post and topic. With iPhone you will only be able to use ios pacific devices unless you jailbreak. And with that (I'm still on the 4s), the connection is shaky at best.

The Akai Synthstation49 works with the iPad4 and an adapter. Probably not what you're looking for, but it does work (but I wouldn't recommend it since the ipad is no longer an exact fit on the stand.

Jackson, please help me. I have the same setup. The less-common 2i4 with an iPad4. What powerered usb hub are you using? Are you using the lightning to USB adapator or cable? Wwhat iOS are you using?

The 48V lights up when I press, but the USB and MIDI lights are flickering. Meanwhile on the iPad it says THIS ACCESSORY IS NOT SUPPORTED BY IPAD.

Help me, please!

i'm guessing its too much to ask for a usb cable that does audio and midi straight into my daw?

my ipad 4 is great as a controller for ableton live with touchable ... but as soon as i try to get audio out of it... or sync midi to my mac it just becomes amazingly annoying :(
