Oh well...yeah GEMA...
This can lead to some big discussion here in Germany :D

Anyways, thanks for doing a re-upload.

(btw, there ARE ways to watch these blocked videos, thanks to proxies, but I thought I let you know anyways)

secretkillerofnames wrote:Well I have the Lemur app so I thought i'd give this a go. At very least it's a convenient database of interesting chords for me to learn. But once you get through the pain of connecting Lemur to your DAW (adhoc connections remain very painful to setup on my Macs) this is a thoroughly amazing tool.

I've programmed a few fairly basic Lemur patches and am stunned at how fast and easy this is.
The touch functionality seems pretty important for usability but this is mainly a clever database. I can imagine a Max/MSP tool or maybe something in Synthedit but it isn't a regular VST that is for sure.
Hey Secretkillerofnames,
Many thanks for all your comments. Glad you found enChord so useful. Best, Avantgarde Sound

That's OK. You can pay me later. :hihi:

A couple of tips for users and potential users:

TIP 1: MIDI CONNECTIVITY
You can add a MIDI interface to your iPad (such as iRig MIDI or MIDI Mobilizer or even a simple $5 USB-to-MIDI cable using the iPad USB adapter).

One great advantage of hardwired MIDI connectivity is that latency is reduced (less latency = better performance).

When you are using such MIDI interfacing device, you simply assign it as your MIDI target output 1 in Lemur (enChord uses this output), and then you connect the MIDI cables to anything you want: hw synths, computer MIDI interfaces, etc., just a like a hw MIDI controller!

TIP 2: enChord's HARMONY ANALYSIS AND PROGRESSION ASSISTANCE
Besides the direct use of enChord databases of chords and scales, it would be worth noting that it doesn't stop there for potential uses.

enChord features chord progression analysis and gives you harmonically perfect suggestions. Upon base scale selection, the modulation analysis feature will analyse ALL the included scales and make suggestions as to what scale you could modulate to (it would also give ALL scales a rating of either A, B or none, according to harmonic suitability, respectively).

When you do this and run the chord progression analysis again to add more chords to your composition or your performance design, enChord will give new chord progression suggestions based on your chosen key. This simple method takes you to very surprising and pleasant results in terms of overall harmony design.

Now, add to that the fact that you can manually invert, expand and transpose any suggestions and audition them, well... it is up to enChord users to show us how deep the rabbit hole goes...

Cheers!

A question w/regard to this... do you mean to tell me I can plug a USB to MIDI cable into the iPad Camera Connection Kit and it will allow Lemur to talk to my computer?

Because I was under the impression that didn't work - hence the needlessly expensive MIDI interfaces like iRig and MIDI Mobilizer.

Yeah, you can take a look at these posts over at Liine's forum:
http://liine.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5750#p5750

http://liine.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2338#p2338

http://liine.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2342#p2342

I personally use IK iRig MIDI, because of the fact (afaik) that this seems to be the only device that gives you direct MIDI connectivity AND also provides you with the secondary USB port that keeps your iPad charged.

So here is a hypothetical. I use a Motu Ultralite powered from the MacBook Pro FireWire port. If I connect the iPad to the Ultralite using a camera connection kit and a USB to MIDI cable and load Lemur up, will the Midi values be seen by a DAW on the MacBook?

Yup. Just make sure you set your DAW to listen to the correct input (your Lemur/iPad output).

Since this is more on Liine's side, I would also recommend that you contact them directly for more recommendations. By now, they must know them all.

This all sounds very promising, but surely the xyz-Pad/controller/whatever concept is going to be superseded by Leap?

https://leapmotion.com/

You add the Leap Motion USB controller @70 bucks to your computer and hey! presto - you don't even have to touch the screen!

Apparently Leap is shipping in February and a couple of months later, we can forget all about pads and touch screens to run enChord v. 2! ;-)

Seriously - do have a look at the Leapmotion website! It's food for thought. It's a revelation. It's Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

It's 1/10 the cost of an iPad. And no greasy finger prints on the screen, either.

If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Yeah if it works as smoothly as it does in the video... maybe. The Kinect didn't work for me as a controller because i don't like jigging around to do stuff. And the Wiimote is fine for movements contained to it (like controlling a theremin) but trying to control a cursor on a screen is painful. This could just as easily be another annoying fad that makes you wish for faders, knobs and mouse control.

The Leap Motion precision is apparently of a completely different magnitude compared to the 'primitive' Wiimote and Kinect.

The dev is completely silent- I still have questions.

Also why ebay??

Is anyone using this?

I hear you ;)
I went ahead anyway and removed the whole "sinful" audio track in YouTube.
Regretfully there are no facilities to replace the audio with suitable fade ins/outs etc. So the video now is even worse.
I will have to wait for the release of the next video, which most likely include the iPad standalone version instead.
Thanks to you and all our German friends for the advice on this Gema issue. Quite unexpected.

Cheers!

Hey there S.K.O.N! Would you care to tell us all fellow enChord users what you went with in the end? The most testimonies we get, I guess the better for all involved in trying to use their iPads for music making!

Cheers!

Hey Pinki! Nah, not just silent! Working hard in silence :) !!

The reason to use eBay was due to the fact that I had to make a strategic decision to release enChord v1 as soon as possible after a series of factors combined and prompted me to do so.

However, even if a small improvement, I am pleased to announce the http://www.AvantgardeSound.com website is now live, and interested music making colleagues can acquire enChord directly from us at our website...
Well at least more directly as now the only entity left taking a big bite of every sale is PayPal, which at least is a bit more acceptable than the over 11% plus insertions and other fees being charged by eBay (add Paypal fees, and you get the idea: their combined stake is bigger than even mine).

Really, it is not easy, but I do believe in enChord's great potential. That's why we are pushing ourselves to the limit to release enChord's iPad standalone version ASAP.

Nonetheless, to celebrate our new little website, new customers are welcome to get enChord v1 for Lemur and iPad with a +10% discount vs the introductory price if bought directly from our website. Just go to: http://www.AvantgardeSound.com and click on the Buy Now button.

I guess, besides the advantage of getting enChord v2 (yes, v2, with new features) with a juicy discount, they also get to put their able hands on enChord before anyone else.

And yes, we want and will share the savings in fees with our users. It's just the right thing regardless of how much we need every cent for a successful porting and v2 version.

Happy music making guys! I am back to work now!!

PS: Btw, a FREE maintenance update and an improved manual are to be released before this Sunday for all currently licensed users. Stay tuned and thanks for using Avantgarde Sound's enChord!
