I'm falling hard for good dubstep acts like Knife Party and Zomboy! Is anyone working on or thinking of making a Zebra soundet of Dubstep sounds/patches? I'm thinking that the filters in Z2 and HZ would be amazing for this kind of gentle music...

No offense to the talented programmer, but these are bit too gentle for what I'm thinking of. And I don't have time nor the talent to program them myself. But thanks for the suggestion.

I can't wait to hear what you come up withsynaesthesia wrote:Working on it Ned, working on it...
A "modern" Zebra soundset is also one of the things I'm working on. This will also include some dubset-ish sounds. However, I'm not too familiar with all this modern stuff, so this will be more like my own take on that kind of stuff (at least that's the idea).
I already have some cool sounds so far
Cheers

Oh yeah, Dubstep... been trying myself... but I'm no where near the sound.
It's more than just one sound, it's an approach... the sound needs to snap to entirely different settings in an instant. So it just SLAPS you around!
One young fellow on YouTube was working with a oldish Korg MS2000, sitting and twisting the dials till it digitally howled, brayed or groaned, then sampling the results... this gave him the violent sonic change he seemed to be looking for. Each pad was sharply different from the next... kind of like noisy digital explosion cut up and played out of order.
He then would compose with the field of sounds on the pads. Compression seems VERY important... but the sudden change was what he was after.
I can occasionally get a good rough approximation by setting the LFO rate to both aftertouch AND another knob... so the comb filter doesn't know which way to go... Gets the diving, swooping WuuUUUuwuuuWUWUWUWUb type of sound, but I can't get that "cut up" feel.
Just can't change the sonic "character" fast enough in Zebra... and i don't have enough spare hands to spin all the knobs required!!

X/Y option is not sudden enough... especially with my controller (MPK25 with knobs assigned to X/Y). The only way X/Y pads can work that fast is to have maybe an ipad running touchOSC to poke randomly... maybe.
I'm open to suggestions
One young man remarking on the dry, aging hipster nature of videos touting the new Push controller...recounting the many uses of Ableton (pop dance, hiphop, etc), asked "whats with all the BEARD STROKING?" ... I laughed so hard (and not because I have a beard). He's right!
Face it... Dubstep bears NO resemblance to the oozing, smooth, reverb-filled patches that dominate Zebra's patch list. This is a whole new animal to sound design for... and all i see is SLACKER SOUNDDESIGNERS around here.
The facts are simple... if Zebra doesn't attract NEW users, Zebra (or Diva or whatever) won't last long. As the complexity of sound design on synths like this is profound, thus I worry that young guys will just pass up these tools for *similar* tools that have the RIGHT PATCHES installed.
We need a HUGE BUCKET of new sounds to keep the edge sharp. I can make progress for myself, but new users need more help than just abandoning them with nothing to work with.
No more rhodes pianos and %^&**& Space-opera sounds... the kids want the NEW STUFF!!!
DROP THAT BASS!!!

I have an X/Y pad on my controller and you can tap it and it stays (or not)TomTwohy wrote:X/Y option is not sudden enough... especially with my controller (MPK25 with knobs assigned to X/Y). plus you can use the mouse to click anywhere in a Zebra X/Y pad and it jumps there

Modwheel + Pitchwheel mapped to many parameters = big fast changes. Add X + Y mapped to just as many parameters...

Did all that, boys... AND aftertouch... the computer (Mac Air track pad) is to fussy for me to work in "mid-dub". Still use the pitch bend for.. erm... pitch bending... so it's already doing full duty, how do you employ it? Same?
The sounds I'm finding, altering, making are ok-ish... sometimes I like what I hear... then I listen to SKiSM and feel inadequate for some reason.[link] http://soundcloud.com/weareskism/skism-experts [/link]
The more I listen to Dubstep the more it sounds like my whole approach is "whack", after all, it's a sample/DJ based form of music. Out of frustration, I just want sound designers to fix it for me and make me look good.
We should all appreciate what we have more these days, and my lil' keyboard is good for now. The MPK25 is small but has many nice aspects (and stores easy with one cable!).
Besides, this lack of control is pushing me into building my own controller... which might not be so bad! I have a Techshop membership... I teach silicone molding and casting (wrote the class actually) and have a boatload of electronics geeks to teach me how to solder all those boring jumpers.
DIY controllers is one of the MOST interesting things about the EDM/Controllerism mini movement (ok... fad).
It's pretty cool!:D

I have played synths since 1981, though coming up with dubstep synth stuff by myself just doesn't seem to be something I have a knack for at all (maybe I don't own the right synths). You may want to try this since it is an easy way to come up with dubstep type stuff. I don't think Urs will be mad at me for posting this link since I don't believe it is a product that directly competes with any u-he products:

Well, I also have been poking with 'em since '81... though not with much success.
Dubstep is a bit like "Surf Guitar"... topical and tied to an era... a fun musical choice.
Nonetheless, the link you are showing serves as an example of a company trying almost too hard to cater to the DubStep "thing".
Luckily U-he makes quality stuff and I feel the sounds are in there, just have to find 'em... I don't want to cheapen or "flash up" U-he's core products... just some sounds, really.
I can't imagine a HUGE Dubstep package like he Hans Zimmer Dark Zebra, but when I tour Soundcloud... I wonder.
Certainly my own ego would be to inflated to play with this other plugin (i'm not offended, just embarrassed)... might DL this program's demo to see their approach, thanks!
Zebra's cool enough as it is, we merely crave sounds perhaps beyond our age group... something is happening out there and instead of complaining, we want to PLAY! Dubstep seems to be a good pass-time for youth and adults.
I certainly want to encourage sounds designers to earn more money as well... YAY sound-designers!!
