Hi,

I just went for the TotalBundle as the MeldaPlugins are a heavily underestimated set of great plugins in my opinion. In fact, you really dont need a lot besides this pack to do great music in any DAW.

However I did have some problems getting decent results out of the MMultibandTransient. I have two other TransientDesigners (both very simple and only singleband: SPL Transient Designer and NI Transient Master) and did some side by side comparisons.
I tried all of them on a drumloop:
- the NI TransientMaster gave my an instant gratification, overall very natural sound and a heavy gain in punch if you crank up the Attack knob
- the SPL still gave the drums some punch, but sounded less natural in higher settings

However I couldn't get eaven near with the MMultibandTransient. Whatever I tried the result sounded harsh, as if some form of white noise would be introduced.
Is it just me, am I doing something wrong?

Thank you,
Codex

Hi,

well, for these things you really need to send me some audio examples (to info@meldaproduction.com for example) . It is very probable each of the transient processors will sound different on any audio material, so it depends on what you are processing and what you want.

I'm curious to hear some audio examples too.

Ok here you go:

First the dry drums:

Then with the SPL Transient Designer:

Then the NI Transient Master:

And the best I could get out of a 1-band MMTransient:

I did set the output for all plugs to the same peak volume. However to be fair it has to be noted, that the NI Transient Master has a built in limiter, so you can push that thing to the top and peak volume will stay the same.
I did therefor export another version of the NI Transient master with the internal limiter switched off:

Still I think the differences are obvious, also the MMTransient did change the sustain of the sounds, however I left the sustain knob untouched...

Or did I get something wrong?

Ok, so I checked it (though comparing anything on SoundCloud is a nightmare...) and I really don't know what I would say about that. Each sounds different. Better? Who knows. You obviously know what you want and maybe MMTransient isn't the right tool for it.

To me sounds the MMTransient version a little overused, I'd suggest decresing attack and resolution. On headphones it didn't seem too much, but I hear quite loud ugly clicking on all the other versions on monitors, which makes me consider MMTransient version maybe a little smoother.

Anyway in general I'm afraid I don't see a reason to consider some of them better or worse. Personally I like the original loop the most despite it is very incoherent when it comes to the bass and snare.

EDIT: The limited version cannot me compared of course.

Thank you for comparing!

I just didn't think the differences are so big... by the way I tried the MMTransient on some other material (also a drumloop) yesterday. I used all 6 bands and used different settings for the bass drum and the snare and this time MMTransient gave me the best results of all three. So it really seems to depend very much on the material which one works best for a specific situation...
Or is MMTransient maybe optimized to work especially good on narrow bands?

I agree on SoundCloud... is there a better alternative?

Thank you!

By the way,

it might be a good idea to add a optional limiter to the output stage of MMTransient as well. This maybe psychological but when turning up the NI Transient master you get this "instant gratification" feeling as I wrote. Because as you turn up the attack for example the sound get more overall punch and loudness which often is desired.
I myself got trapped by this, first I thought "Wow the NI sounds best of them all!", then later I realized that is uses a limiter. Still this first "Wow" impression is there and you might want that too for your products! :-)

Just an idea!

Well, the multiband option lets it very well adapt to different material. But in general any transient shaper just sounds different. There is no general algorithm, in fact even transient definition is problematic, so you just have to find your own tool for each audio material (I personally only use MMTransient though, it can usually be adapted very well).

About the limiter - I think that could be the problem in your case - you use the integrated limiter, which gives something you call "instant gratification", but it's actually the reason of loudness war, which everyone is trying to avoid now. Try this:
1) Use the NI with limiter and put loudness meter (not peak meter!!) after it.
2) Use it without limiter on another track and put loudness meter after it.
3) Decrease level of the limited track to match the not-limited track.
4) Listen to both for a longer time. We'll see which you will like more ;)
