Hey Folks,

I'm having some fun with MuLab again, finally making a nicer Drum Synth. It's still a work in progress, but I often drift off into other experiments, so I figured it's best if I share this one now...

MyFairLazy.MuSession

I really enjoy making the interface now.

The tune is rather primitive, but it's only about the drums, really.
There are still a few things I find a bit flimsy or weird in the audio processing, particularly the filters. I'm swimming around there a little. Also I wished there was a "Sync" option/feature. I'm also not sure how to easily do a monophonic mode rather than polyphonic. Eitherway... fun nontheless! :D

Feel free to noodle some more drums into it and share. Would be fun. Just no samples, please! Consider it a challenge, if you will. ;)

I put an EQ on the Bass Drum to give it some more realism: Synth Drumset.Mux

UH, nice, subtle but nicely pushy! Thanks! :D
(The "Crashy" sound, by the way, doubles as "clap" on B1 or B0 when it's speed is Fast. Slower speeds will turn it more into a crash cymbal thing.)

Nice!! Thanks for sharing.

Mono Mode: It's not really there, but you can do it if you have max 2 notes active at any time. What you have to do is to take everything out of a polysynth and put it top level MUX. Edit every envelope's property (options menu) and tick the "Legato Mode".

Here is an example of the "A Space Jouney" patch in mono mode (no GUI!).

Can you be more specific about the 'weird' parts of the processing?

Sync: You can sync all MPEs and LFOs. There is a "Sync" field in the LFOs and the MPEs need to be set to Beats instead of Seconds.
Anything missing?

Cheers!

This thread is a loop !

Post

Hehehe, huh? This thread is a loop? Certainly makes me wonder just how tired I am! :D

Sync as in waveform sync, not sync timing. Sorry for not clarifying.

One weirdness:
- The filters act unique as in dramatic resonance, which feels almost detached from the filter frequency in a peculiar way. I can't quite put my finger on it.

- The envelopes also have a strange feel somehow, again something I can't fully explain, as if there was some function on their transitions from attack to decay to release.

- I have to investigate the multipoint envelope further, because it looks interesting, yet, it, too, acts a bit unexpected. Hard to say when which phase appears to be active, but that might've been my wacky setup, who knows.

THANK YOU for the tips. The Patch is beautiful, thank you! :) ...very elegant work-around!

Filter resonance indeed pushes levels around the filter freqency to extremes, but that is part of the implementation, where feedback is not limited (i presume!).
My way around this is to use a 24db filter with 2 filter modules in series. A tanh between them to kill the reso level and get a more crunchy sound and the second filter reso setup to half or quarter of the reso of the first filter.

Multi point envelopes have 2 'states': they have a loop, or they don't.
If there is no loop, the entire envelope reacts to Attack Speed.
If they have a loop, anything before the loop is Attack Speed, the loop is Loop Speed and anything after the loop reacts to Release Speed.
Global Speed always works on all parts at the same time.

The regular ADSRs have a log/exp behaviour since M4, which sonds very different to the old linear implementation in M3. If it's this that bothers you, there are ADSR Linear presets for the Multi Point Env in the factory library.

I hope this helps!

Wow, you're very helpful indeed, thank you very much!
DOH, I could've figured the loop thing out...shame on me. Makes perfect sense.
AHA, I knew there was something funny with the ADSR. It's a bit bold to preset such behavior, if you ask me. It's good at release, maybe, maybe at attack, but even there I would either not have it or make it an option, which may be generally a good idea. I think, once I'm comfy with the multi point I may only use that then anyway. The visual helps a great deal.

Interesting filter solution you got there, too. I'll have a go at that for sure. I love playing around, but it's a bit unfortunate if it's about work-arounds. Maybe a set of "classic" filter types might be cool. Certainly some exciting room for expansion all through the MuSynth. I know, it may end up daunting for beginners...but I'm certain Jo can keep it elegant. :D
