For those interested there's a BETA TEST launcher for the PortableAppsPlatform.

BE WARNED - THIS IS A BETA TEST RELEASE - THERE IS A RISK OF DATA LOSS - BACKUP SENSITIVE DATA BEFORE TESTING!!!

EDIT:
I've tested various ways of keeping files/folders open during startup/closure of MuLab and the way the launcher deals with this is to request closing the offending file/folder before continuing. Version tested: DevTest3.

Isn't Mulab already portable?

Hey, I'm Eurydice(Izzy for short) - she/her

Yes it is. But as with many apps on this site that are already portable, they are automatically updated so it saves you doing it. Unless you like the latest beta version then it's irrelevant.

No doubt some will find this useful so I posted it :-)

Sorry Jo, better late than never  but are you ok with this launcher?

This launcher d/l's MuLab Free and will keep it up to date with official releases. If you have bought a license, then that's a bonus ;-) But it's handy if you dislike updating apps manually.

I've tested DevTest3 and open files on closure of MuLab will bring up a message window warning to close the open file/folder before the launcher moves the User folder.

If anyone here does actually use it the PAMenu will also backup your User folder.

If it's within the MuLab User License Agreement, then it's ok.

If it's not, then please email me about this.

Not sure what you mean by within agreement?

Post

Basically the launcher will d/l and install MuLab Free into the PortableApps Menu installation and can be used from any removable media. As MuLab is already portable I assumed it was ok. It doesn't in any way alter the MuLab installation other than moving the User folder back and forward on use.

Sounds ok :)

Thanks. If there was anything dodgy about it I wouldn't support it. The guys at portableapps.com do everything legally so you've no worries there.

Hopefully they always use the very latest package! By the way, a new one is coming very soon. (M5.0.39)

Post

Well, that's the problem, they can't. If you remember I requested you change the way you name your updates by removing the version numbers? You declined, which I respect, it's up to you and if that's how you want to keep it that's fine.

But... If you wouldn't mind making a couple changes to help this launcher keep up to date with the latest release, Then that would be fantastic! :-) I think it needs a static link/address for ANY future updates whether M5, M6 or M7. I believe you still supply older versions too and imagine once outdated it goes into an archive? Something like that? Atm, only official releases are downloaded.

Anyway, I don't want to take up too much of your time as I understand it's important. But please keep it in mind if you could, thanks Jo.

Looking forward, as always, to the next release...

Maybe we were talking about test packages then?
They indeed include the version number in the zip file name.
But the final packages that are on www.mutools.com/mulab-downloads.html do not include a version number, these are static file names so that links anywhere on the net survive all the time.

Note that there is a MuLab PAD file so your partner can check that PAD file to check whether MuLab has updated: http://www.mutools.com/mulab/pad_file.xml

Post

Sorry, that's way over my head!

The launcher will update to the final packages no problem. It is indeed the test packages where the launcher fails. Would that PAD file solve the problem?

What: PAD files? Please have a google.

Please do not spread the test packages as if they are release packages.
I think it's better to stay with the release packages only. That also solves the prob.
Would that PAD file solve the problem?
That's a question for you guys.

Post

Ok that's fine then, if you'd rather stick to release packages there's no problem to solve :-)

I suppose in this situation it's difficult. One the one hand there's newcomers trying out MuLab and on the other there's licensed users wanting the latest version. I completely understand your reasons though, but... MuLab very RARELY has bugs, it appears at least. :?:

Thanks for your time on this Jo much appreciated. Hopefully at some point in the future it'll become an official launcher and will get you some advertising ;-)
