Mixdown track at a louder volume

I know very little about the mastering side of things and I want to know how I would mix-down a track at a certain volume but still avoid clipping. With logic you could just use a multi-compressor and a limiter to boost the gain and it'd be fine (although the audiophiles aren't overly keen on this anyway) but I haven't found a way with the plug-ins I have to do it (the default ones basically with a little pack of plugins I bought).

I know maybe that wasn't entirely clear but any attempt to help would be appreciated. I can obviously clarify if you're not entirely sure what I am asking.

I have to admit I master in Audacity. I get a rough idea what the general track level is, decide how much dynamic range to kill and then run a compressor over the track to bring the quite bits up. After that, I'll just amplify so the track is as loud as possible without clipping. That's two commands in Audacity.

As I'd not want to think about mastering until I'm as happy with the mix as possible, this way stops me mixing the two up.

Limiter helps a lot in this case.

Yes, but are there any good free ones available or at cheap prices? The tube limiter on mulab is either something entirely different or just very bad.

Bad? You just gotta know how to use it

There are quite several limiters that do a really good job. This is not a MuLab specific subject but I'll post here just to show that MuLab users and forum is full of helpful nice people :)

So, several options:
LoudMax a really cool brickwall limiter, very transparent.

BuzMaxi 3 another one, also very transparent.

Kjaerhus Master Limiter, included in Kjaerhus Classic Series, free download here:

Broadcast processor, Barricade, Barricade Pro from JB Free Bundle, but there are many more VERY useful plugins. A "must have".

C3 Multi Band Compressor a nice but a bit old and maybe you got already covered by other plugins.

The FR Limit 87 from eaReckon Free 87 Series

Thank you my dear.
