@StatusTrance: When it pops, are there a lot of notes starting at the same time?

Post

Hey thanks for chipping in. When you refer to system I take it you're referring to your audio interface, right? The really weird thing is that I can play back my composition in Traktor with no problem (that's the MP3 version of it I created with Audacity), however, when I play it back in MUL.LAB or Winamp it pops like crazy.

I'm using the NI Komplete Audio 6 interface and it is setup for 48KHz. The only thing I can think of here is that Traktor is native to the interface and uses the A6 driver driver directly, whereas MUL.LAB and Winamp use the ASIO driver. Can that make a difference?

Post

Technically that could be an explanation. But i can't really comment on that, it's more a question for NI support, they might know better what's going on. Strange issue indeed. And annoying i can imagine :?

I'm going to investigate further during the week, will keep you informed!

In the meantime I want to thank you very much for your support! MU.LAB is solid, impressive, and great sound, the alternative for us would have been Ableton at $300, so the upgrade to UL was absolutely worth it. Your support and assistance has been world-class if not better!

Here's a link to our first UL production:

We've featured Mu.Tools in our likes on FB! Keep up the great work! :)

Last night I disabled the Intel WiFi chipset and tried it out, still no luck, popped in MU.LAB, I mixed down in 32 bit, imported the WAV into Audacity, still popped on play-back, then I exported MP3 from Audacity and tested playback in Winamp, still popped but less of it. I imported the MP3 into Traktor Pro and it played back perfectly.

It really seems to be a problem with audio mixed-down from MU.LAB and played back over the ASIO driver, as opposed to the native driver combination of the NI stack.

I can't be the only one using the combination of 64 bit Win 7, NI Komplete Audio 6 and MU.LAB. Is there anyone else facing similar issues?

Sounds a bit like the sound problem I had on my old computer, had to do with the trashy effects included in the sound chip driver :P But I suppose you have ruled that out...

Please try this:

* Close all apps.
* Open Audacity and generate a 10 sec sine wave (Generate -> Tone).
* Play it back.

Does it contain pops/clicks?

Post

No pops in the sine wave.

Post

I'm suprised with that result. The mixdown you sent me does not contain clicks/pops. And you also wrote that when you played back that MuLab mixdown on your iPod all was fine i.e. no clicks/pops. So it has to be something with your system, unless i'm making a mistake in logical reasoning. I think the clicks/pops are added while the mixdown is playing back, they're not in the mixdown itself. But strangely enough the sine you created and played via Audacity does not contain clicks. I'm afraid i can't follow anymore. If it would be my system i would try to test everything again with the NI soundcard disconnectd, thus via the onboard soundcard or via another sound device, and see what results that gives. That way you could check whether it's something with the NI sound driver or not.

Post

Sounds really complicated. If there really were something wrong with the audio file itself, it might mean that some applications or devices have a kind of error correction while others don't, thus the different results when playing the file back.

Can you record a bit of that "pop music" with a microphone in front of your speaker so we know what it sounds like? :D

Post

like i said before, i bet it's your system's samplerate and the audiofile's samplerate that is colliding. Traktor among other programs can compensate for that, winamp cant if i remember it correctly.

@fluffy_little_something Have you ever had Rice Krispies for breakfast? :)

@Crackbaby My Audio 6 is setup for 2 channel, 24 bit, 48000Hz. Are you suggesting that the the problem is compatibility between the 24 bit of Audio 6 and the 32 bit of Mulab?

If so how can I get Mulab to function in 24 bit?

The only option I see is 16 or 32....

Post

bit depth wont create crackles. set up your sound device for 44.1 and see it the problem goes away.

Post

44.1 seems to have fixed the problem. Why was that? Any ideas?
