Hey folks,

while testing our latest creation I tried to make a kind of a dubstep song. Let me know what you think, be critical! ;) Btw. I'm not really "style-freak", and I know it's far from clean dubstep, I'm more like interested in your opinions ;).

Not a bad track at all.

Shame you squashed the dogp*** out of it!

Not even dubstep needs to be crushed that much.

I have to turn it down so much to stop it hurting my ears that it is quiet.

If you want it louder, you turn it down. If you want it quiet, you squish the dogp*** out of it.

:)

Good track though. Could you 'master' it again and not be so aggressive on the limiting?

I'm assuming it is a limiter that squared your waveform so much and not the way it was recorded.

Kids these days...

cheers.

Good point, I didn't really work on that much (well, not at all :D ), I thought dubstep, yeah, it must be dirty!!! :D

I'm not a massive dubstep fan, but this track is VERY good.
I really like it a lot and that is saying something.

The sounds are right, the arrangement moves along nicely, it is not too repetitive and provides some nice changes for interest. I'd say it's pretty much as good as any dubstep I've heard.

Though some would go as far in the limiting department, with a few going further, I think most would ease off a few dB. It really doesn't need it and is counterproductive. Less limiting means I can turn it up and it will be louder!

I've opened it in a wave editor and I can see the waveform is clipped and in the red.

Shame, because it really is very good music, whatever genre you want to call it.

cheers.

Thanks ! I'll definitely check the limiter ;) (though I kind of like how massive it is :D )

Must admit, i hav'nt listened to much dubstep and what i have heard has'nt really grabbed me.

That said, i quite liked this and i especially liked it when it changed into that swingbeat part. I'd love to hear that part developed into a full track as it definitely has potential for that.

As i say, not one of my personal fave styles of electronica, but you made this one more interesting with that beat change twist.

The mix sounded good on my speakers.

It just needs to breathe a little bit more.

Having said that, there are far worse tracks out there.

I want to listen to it LOUD, but I can't.

I would do this by turning up the volume knob all the way, but I can't because I have to have it way down or it HURTS my ears.

I can listen to music at deafening levels. I used to listen to heavy metal so loudly in my headphones, that my parents would tell me to turn the music down because they couldn't hear the tv properly. From next door! That is loud.

I'm the guy with his head in the bass bin at a club. It's not hitting me until my trousers are flapping and my hair is getting a free blow-dry.

You can't do that with a track that is slammed as far as that. You would damage people's hearing. And that is no joke. I've walked out of clubs with dodgy P.A. systems where they push it past the point of what it is cabable of. That damages your hearing. I have sensitive hearing, that is how I have been able to listen to such high volume for so long without permanently damaging them. If that makes sense.

There is a difference between distortion and volume. Your track is not totally distorted, but it is on the road. I only say this because it is such a high-quality track let down by a very simple and easily rectifiable thing.

Anyway, I've made my point (or not). I still think it's a superb bit of music that someone would probably be interested in releasing. Hat's off to you. Bravo!

Why wouldn't it sound good on your speakers? I could squeeze an extra dB out of it further and it would still sound good on your speakers.

But..

It would sound just as good on your speakers, if it was not so square-waved, and you just turned up the volume knob. In fact it would probably sound better because you would have dynamics and it could pump more.

When that throbbing comes in, I want to feel it pumping. It can't pump if it is slammed to the wall. It has nowhere to go.

This in essence is exactly what the loudness war is about. And it is a war, because music that I really like (like this track) can not be listened to at high volume.

Does anyone understand that I like it LOUD? Limiting at this level reduces dynamic range and won't let the music breathe and flow and PUMP and THROB. Whoosh.......

Ok, I didn't want to have to do this, but I'm left with no choice. Here is a link to:

That's all I'm going to say now. I'll shut up. This track deserves people to focus on the music (if they can). :hihi:

cheers.

Big up to your comments, codec_spurt.

I always find it cool someone voicing against (overly) track slamming, I also do that sometimes, but sometimes I just get tired of it.

Excellent! Looking forward to demo it. :)

Interesting sounds on here.

For the last year or so I have been paying close attention to the dynamic range levels both pre- and post-mastering on my tracks. I can hear a lack of dynamic range in here, but it still sounds pretty good to me. The percussion in particular is very lively and interesting.

Could be the mastering, could be a lack of headroom in the mix. Whatever the ins and outs of that, I must have liked it. I've played it at least 5 times.

Good work :)

Obviously not enough. ;-)

I played it about 30 times.

I guess it's true what they say in the loudness wars. There are those that notice a difference and don't like what they hear. And there are those that just don't know wtf they are talking about.

;-)

You guys like quiet music. It's ok. Come round to my place. I'll knock your f***ing socks off. We like it loud here. But we like our hearing more.

Now, really, any more people want to advertise their ignorance and say they can't hear a difference, or even worse, that it sounds good to them?

I hope none of you ever want to produce any songs, or god forbid, code any plugins for DSP tech?

:D

It's really basic stuff, that even I can understand. Because it's true and verifiable. I'm waiting for the heavy weights of the audio world to weigh in and tell me I am wrong. But they won't because they know I am right. Even if they keep their mouths shut.

Great music. Great arrangement. Not sure about the rest.

Maybe this critique is like an arrow through your heart, then maybe you are a true artiste. But this is the caff...

Music is more important than plugins, than relationships, than money, than saying the right thing...

cheers.

Do I detect some hostility here? I guess I'm lucky I didn't actually disagree with you :?

That's incredibly loud.

Like the music. Tis 7 on the DR Meter, so is not supersquashed, but I'm not sure how many dB it is over, maybe 3 ?? Nothing that a quick re re-pass wouldn't fix, :D as seismic said.
