Hey V'ger I think that latest entry is from 2 months ago, and not sure if it's Aalto. I was going through some tracks and saw him, and told him about One Synth Challenge, not sure he understood.

Post

Ah Ok, seems unlikely it is all kosher if it's a 2 months old tune and doesn't come with a write-up so removed.

Hey, does anyone have issues getting notes to play in sync? For example my 4/4 kick drum seems to play almost 4/4. Strangely, the layering is fine. It plays the first note ok, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th note are a bit too fast.

I verified this is definitely Aalto. Also when I layer drums, they sound really bad until I bounce them.

Think I'm having a similar issue. Working on a kick drum (8 layers on this baby - a new record for me) and after bouncing down noticed the hits are slightly ahead of the beat. I'd like to just snip them and budge them forward, but would like to hear from V'ger before continuing if that's allowable within the rules?

Argh, I have yet to get started on my track this month beyond a few bad ideas; but this doesn't sound great - a technique that I rely heavily on!

No sampling to get a different sounding result :uhuhuh:

From the rules:

"for convenience or CPU saving, synth bouncing/sampling are allowed but only where the EXACT same result could have been achieved using the original synth. This means that for example pitching and reversing is not allowed. Sampling for example a bass drum in order to get a consistent sound is not allowed either."

Post

I appreciate this rule... It means we have to work with this STRANGE BEASTTTT ...

Can anyone confirm though if this is a bug? I find it strange that it consistently hits notes a little too quick... if it was some analog modeling thing, it would be a little more sporadic but closer on the beat.

Post

Thanks for the clarification V'ger.
Thought of it more as shifting than sampling, but understand it's a slippery slope. Perhaps the rules should state 'No editing of bounced audio'

@bjporter: Strange beast indeed! One similarity is we are both using Cubase. I use 48khz sampling rate. Might try it @44 and see if it makes any difference. No big deal though, maybe the hurried beats will add some excitement. :hihi:

Post

Hey Evo... I use 48 and 44 on and off - this time 44.

I tried various patches and they all seem to have this problem, I'm going to ask the company about it. Maybe they would be so kind to check out some lines of code - I'm thinking they will benefit from this - since its a big problem.

Just noticed on the aalto forum a post from a few weeks ago that changing the buffer size changes the timing. Interesting.

Finally got this installed and the sync thing is weird, first bar okay, then it starts playing out of sync then slowly shifts back in. This is a very strange synth indeed.

This might well be, but it is fine with me.

I started out with 76 bpm and ended up with Reaper playing on a speed rate of 0.4 which makes for about 35 bpm and together with modulated LFOs and other goodies brings forth Aalto's organic and temperamental nature in slooooooow warbling manner.

So how should I care. Maybe you should neither. Take what you get and be creative - as you will be in the end, I am sure. Embrace the entropy :D

I just uploaded a preview of

Bunker Filled With Sand
  • DAW: Reaper
    Aalto: 9 instances
Automations: mainly modulations of Aalto's LFOs
Effects: Maxwell limiter on master, TAL Tube for that tiny bit of warmth in some places, reverb and delay from Aalto
    DR: 8 (hmm? I expected 15 upward)
Please download if you don't mind. It sounds awful on CompressionCloud.
