Plugin scanning is just so tedious

Tracktion is pretty stable now and starts up ultra fast but really the plugin scan is driving me up the wall. It takes so long, hogs all my system resources and even steals focus from other programmes - can't even run it while typing into Safari. I don't care that there's no startup scan - that used to slow things down. But making the scan run from 0 whenever I run it just to add a new plugin or two is crazy - it should just update the list, not remake it every time from scratch. That should be a once only job for a host on a new system. No other host does this - whether AU or VST they all have the option to update as well as rescan.

Reading the original post, I wonder if you're even using the same program as me??

The latest version now rescans my entire plugin folder in a few seconds, by checking multiple plugins in parallel. I'm at a loss to know what could be slowing your machine down - even if you have hundreds of plugins, it should only take a minute at worst case.

That would be crazy, but that's not what it does. It has always ignored VST plugins that it has already seen. For AUs, it does need to rescan them all because there's no way to know whether their properties have changed (it can't look at the date of the file like it can for VST), but IIRC you're a Windows user (?)

On my regular machine(my former daw) I've tested 5-6 different virus and spam protecting thingies.

Most of these you have to turn off most features - or it will create a monster of your machine. They interfer with most things and I could not run Youtube stuff without stuttering video all the time. Every process that runs have extra dll's from virus protection running. They really went overboard doing this.

Best is not to have daw connected to internet continuously, and remove or deactivate virus protection for regular daw work.

It could be an thing to check at least.

I only have about 100 plugins(about 70 Waves through shell), but that was really quick scan in T4.(Once I found out that I had to run tracktion64.exe that is).

Judging from the fact that aMused is referring to Safari and AU:s, I'd assume he's on a Mac.

I have also complained about the molasses AU scan. If it's not possibel to read the AU dates, I wonder, then, how DSP Quattro and Digital Performer manage to only look for newly added AU:s when scanning?

I fully agree with aMused - adding a new AU is a drag.

They probably just ignore any IDs they've seen before. We could choose to do that too, but it means that if a new version of a plugin comes out which has a different name/description/number of inputs/outputs, etc, then it won't realise that those things have changed.

If every host that used Au's had to rescan them from scratch every time one plugin was changed, everyone would literally be bald. Come on.

In fact, speaking generally, when you're telling a developer how to code their app, and they explain how it currently works, it's a good idea to try to understand the response before arguing about it. In my experience.

Scan is very slow for both formats on Mac i7 mountain lion. Mine did restart from scratch as well. Took hours. Why should it take hours? every other daw takes seconds. As each new plugin loads it triggers the app notifaction system (i.e., a new bouncing icon in the dock) which causes the mac screen to " blink" if you try to use it with Tracktion running in the background-- The mac is unusable while loading plugins.

This is not some random guys system problem, this is a tracktion problem (on mac at least). Please fix.

I have the same problems on mac, although it has been made quicker the last version.

I killed all my AU and do only work with Mac VST now - the easiest way for me, so my plugins are scanned quickly and not presented twice in the "filters" section.

It's hit and miss for me. The scan new plugins feature definitely scan plugins that have been scanned before which slows it down. If I scan with a project open I get anything from a slow scan to a complete lockup while scanning. Without a project loaded it is mostly a sub 30 second affair but there are still moments it exceeds this. As already said it definitely shows it is scanning plugins that have been scanned before.

Strange. In my system it just takes 3 minutes and I have much plugins.
