I am being optimistic and hoping they use the same Wizardry they have been using to do what they have already done. :)

a lot of what they have already accomplished.. supposedly.. wasn't possible a year ago.. I do believe what you are saying though.. but they/he/she are Wizards!

It doesn't work like that, I'm afraid. You're not going to discover some new way to send MIDI (particularly not one that existing instruments will understand).

Yes, their fundamental analysis technology is very impressive. I wish I could say the same for their product implementation. I tried to warn them that they were letting this out too soon and setting themselves up for a lot of disappointed users when they eventually got around to tackling the multichannel and pitch bend tracking parts, which I think they underestimated the difficulty of. Hence this long period without any update and that really disappointing last update with the half-baked bend tracking on a single polyphonic channel. (Which of course is not how any existing MIDI guitar controller products work. I'm not even sure they own one to test and match features against. I've tried to point them at relevant parts of the Roland product manuals to show how "everyone else" handles this stuff.)

Really, none of this remaining stuff should be that hard (.tun files excepted), but I think they're better at the science than the practical engineering/productization parts.

Mind you, these are just educated guesses. I'm not privy to any info about their progress or what they're currently working on. All just IMHO.

memyselfandus, is it lack of pitch bends and multi channels that disappointed you? In the new IPhone version it now complains that my 4G phone is old. So I'm choosing between new Iphone / Ipad vs. Fishman device, any advice?

AdmiralQuality, we really try to base developments on users needs, prioritise all requests and implement the most wanted. Apart from pitch bends, the request we hear most often is drop tunings support, bass support, a built in tuner and not least getting out of the beta phase.

Pitch bend was the most requested feature for 0.6 and you are right we put it in a bit prematurely. The reason was that we wanted to test or validate the experimental pitch-bend-and-full-chords-on-one-midi-channel feature, which I believe was never achieved for any hardware solution but accomplish to mix chords and leads in a very simple setup.

In my opinion midi guitars have traditionally been too inaccessible and we want to change that. The amount of physical boxes, cables, converters and software installations traditionally needed to get midi guitar signals to play with soft synth have been to complex for those who see themselves mainly as guitarists and less confident with plugins and midi.

You are right that pitch bends have slowed down the release cycle quite a bit and its something we learned from and will be aware of in the future. Expect more rapid updates from now on.

We have scheduled multichannel midi (confusingly usually called MIDI MONO mode) for 0.8. We feel the challenges with it is more on communication than technical. Most synths wont work multi-channel (although PolyAna does play nice ;) and so we will try adding an option that MIDI Guitar automatically load 6 instances of a synth to keep things simple for the user. (think of how you need GTAK to make Kontakt work with multichannel midi).

In 0.7 you will have the first glimpse of multichannel midi in the form of a remarkably quick polyphonic-tuner built in and lots of new features and good tracking improvements. I expect we will have it for you guys later next week.

memyselfandus,
Micro-tunings is on the list but as mentioned its only possible with multichannel midi in place first.

iPhone 4 (non-4s) should be good enough as long as you dont use virtual midi synths or select the higher buffersize.
Of course, pitch bend and other features of the plugin/desktop version will make it to iOS as well, in some way or another, but after version 1.0 of the plugin/desktop version.

JJunkie, Thanks for reporting those issues. The audio system of the standalone version has been reimplemented in 0.7 and we will look into the Reaper issues.

Right. And none of those involve scala .tun files.

I still think that's a crazy idea, as evidenced by the fact that no other MIDI guitar converters attempt to do that.

Absolutely. You're changing that by no longer requiring over $1000 of hardware investment. However you're unlikely to change the paradigm of how these work, as that's well established and indeed, determined by the MIDI spec.

Can't wait! And again, this "challenge" is NORMAL for all of the products you're competing with. There's no shortcut around it. Just as there's no shortcut for guitar players having to learn a bit about MIDI and how synth voices work (envelopes, modulation, etc).

And loading 6 instances is a great idea, but I do hope it also saves the STATE of those 6 instances or it isn't of much use.

Frankly I shun that mode and just want a MIDI output I can record, edit and treat as any other MIDI stream in my host. As a "host withing a host", your plug-in is unlikely to offer all the features that the host does. (For example, will it support recording VST automation of controls on the hosted instruments? I don't think there's any practical way it can, short of implementing a "sequencer within a sequencer".)

In 0.7 you will have the first glimpse of multichannel midi in the form of a remarkably quick polyphonic-tuner built in and lots of new features and good tracking improvements. I expect we will have it for you guys later next week.
Polyphonic tuning is also very cool! I've been looking at getting a TC Electronics Poly-Tune for guitar, it seems like such a great and obvious innovation.

Looking forward to the update. A working multichannel mode with bends that track correctly (I'm still convinced the last version didn't track the bends correctly) will be the final nail in the coffin of the hardware solutions.

And yes, you should support any guitar tuning and maybe even more strings (for 7 strings, Chapman Sticks, etc...).

Looking forward to the next release.

It's so convenient. Works great on my iMac.
The 32 bit stand alone is very solid.
The plugin version is great as well. I can achieve
key split and some other cool stuff with piz's midi plugins.
Polyphonic tuning sounds awesome. I had to look that up.

Thanks,
Gary

i just bought the software .. i love it .. hope the next update get more better on latency ... setting :)

Post

'Ditto' regarding the latency settings (from another VERY happy early adopter).
It would be great if it worked with a 32 sample buffer.

Just curious.. not sure if there are any deal breaker limitations with using something like Midi Guitar in RE format or not?

"Propellerhead Reason

Since Reason does not support VST or AU plugins you need to use MIDI Guitar standalone and a virtual midi driver. Its fairly simple:

1. First make sure MIDI Guitar works in standalone mode. If you are using Windows choose Connect to DAW in the MIDI output section of MIDI Guitar and follow the instructions to install a virtual midi driver. Mac users simply select the MIDI Output Route: "MIDI Guitar Virtual MIDI Out".

2. In Reason you must register the virtual MIDI driver as a Master Keyboard. See the image below.

Note that virtual midi is not ideal in terms of latency. We do not know yet if there is has any real impact or not on latency. We will consider Reason Rack Extension in the future."

"We will consider Reason Rack Extension in the future."

Is this still a possibility?

Very glad to get this. Thank you very much!

Can't wait to play.

Upon initial testing, this seems far more sensitive than beta v.6. However, the management features for both instruments and effects do not seem to scan effectively my plugins: Macbook Pro, OSX Mountain Lion version 10.8.3. \Library\Audio\Plugins.
