I suspect it comes down to hard cash - if it's going to be a foreign language the majority of listeners in any given country will go for English as our lingua franca -> more sales.
the whole thing is a bit weird these days and now we dont even have old tel commentating so the comedy value has gone for the uk viewers :(
Germany is Eurovision-crazy! We're the only country I know to televise a massive open air event for it - and people are showing up.

i wish i lived in denmark. i hear its the happiest place on earth.
Yeah, I also heard we are portrayed as so. We are pretty happy I guess :) but we also got Janteloven (Law of Jante) and it's kind of squashing our happiness. The Law of Jante is, and I quote:

"...group behaviour towards individuals within Scandinavian communities that negatively portrays and criticises individual success and achievement as unworthy and inappropriate."

It's kind of dominant. Saying you are good at something or that you got success with something is not appropriate, it's much better to be humble and keep your mouth shut. Did you know, in Denmark we do not cross red traffic lights, even when no cars or bicycles are coming. That's true, we stay put till then green guy arrives.

As we speak about typical national idiosyncrasies: no question on German telly they'll suspect a conspiracy among countries from eastern Europe in order to steal the points belonging to the "good" countries.

The dress of the hostess would look better if it'd lay on the floor.

I know I've been Down Under for 30 odd years but my memories of Eurovision are ABBA, The Brotherhood of Man, Bucks Fizz and I think the last one I saw was the Israeli outfit Isha Cohen and the Alpha Beta (or something like that)…now true they weren't drab ballads but I developed a cholesterol problem at the age of 11 from the cheese intake….it was always a bit weird to me but the whole family used to get together and watch it at my Great Grandmother's house….am I imagining it or did Cliff Richard enter one year?

oh yeah, there was a lot of shite in there, but generally the more homespun folk bits from eastern europe or spain even, where far more interesting to my ears.
a lot of what to me asa kid where weird sounding but captivating at the same time :)
like you, i had to sit through itwith the family, but iat least managed to enjoy some bits.
nowadays it all pretty much sounds like itcould be on the radio over here at any time ;shrug:

The show and the video clips are quite good actually. (2ct)

The music, well, erm, let's see...

Post

Finland is the best so far!

Belarus - meh.....

BTW it appears the gods have heard my prayers - 19 out of 38 artists singing in their own language.

Post

Loved Moldavia.

Cascada was very nervous and i think in the beginning she was a lil bit ahead of the beat.
Finally!
