You can also use mklink, create junctions and leave the registry alone. I would prefer to see the registry go away but it is the Windows way so we deal with it. Companies like Cakewalk are Microsoft partners so they do things the MS way.Davias wrote:+1000VitaminD wrote:And that is a problem though..
I wish more developers would simply use XML files and not the windows registry. Then one can reinstall Windows (should they need to) or completely nuke the C partition (provided you're installing software on a D E or other partition) and retain their software.
Or install on a thumbdrive for portability or backups.
Plus it is just more cluttered having files all over the place instead of in a tidy, single location.
I guess this is a battle for another thread though..
My hard drive is a messShould I reinstall windows, I would have to take months to just set everything to run like before...

Davias - to answer your question about Pentagon, I'd pass on it. It's old, will never see an update, and there are plenty of free options these days... Can't believe they can sell it at $129, Even $19 is still just too much...should be set free. All IMO of course.
Triangle II is sort of it's little brother & is Free - http://www.cakewalk.com/products/triangle/

Actually, all of these going for 20 dollars are old.. even Rapture..
I like P1 but as 1-2-Many said it is getting no updates.. AAMOF I'm not sure cakewalk will even store your serial in their database for P1.. it is legacy software as they see it.
Sounds nice though. Especially the BigTone patches.. I'd have liked to have seen a Pentagon2..

I always thought that PSYN II was Pentagon 2. it is only bundled with CW DAWs. FWIW, I would never rely on anyone to store my software credentials especially with copy protection as simple as what Cakewalk products use. It makes sense to keep your own copies stored safely away. Unlike Pentagon, the sfz engine synths updates are mostly in the expansion packs and not in the synth code.VitaminD wrote:Actually, all of these going for 20 dollars are old.. even Rapture..

Thanks to 1-2-Many and VitaminD ^^
it is not too much a problem for me that there is no updates planed as they are old products, and to me rapture seems quite fully featured.
I was just wondering what was the concept behind Pentagon, is is a simple VA or can it load wavetables like Rapture ? Actually I'm quite happy with all the wavetable I got with Rapture, theses times I think I never have enough single-cycle waveforms, and I like to crossbreed these between different synths that can read them (even if I have little problems with single-cycle wf not looped, and somes synths just play a pop and then nada...). Or was there anything else that was making it standing out of the crowd ?
I have so much freeware, honestly I'm asking myself why I ever buy a commercial synth... But sometimes something is appealing you, and when the price is not too high I can be tempted ^^ So I try to focus myself on unusual features or on great factory presets. Here for Rapture I was seduced by the price first, by the wavetables second, and finally the overall nice quality of factory presets achieved to convince me. After that I hesitate for Dim Pro but I'm not too fond of romplers and disk space is sparse. So then I looked toward Pentagon but told myself I didn't really need it is just another VA.
Scook > thanks for mlink tips, I came across it a few days before... But in case of formatting, everything is gone right ? Or maybe I should write a little batch file to keep theses settings ? But I'm so lazy

Mmmh, already a good hint. So there's not "additional" waves with Pentagon, so maybe a limited aray of waves to start with. I guess I should just launch a Youtube video and ask myself if I like the sound of it (and look carefully how many osc, etc... on the gui) ^^scook wrote:[Unlike Pentagon, the sfz engine synths updates are mostly in the expansion packs and not in the synth code.

Pentagon was part of the series of rgc synths that culminated with z3ta+ and represent a development effort that predate the sfz engine. Rene also developed the sfz engine that resulted in Dimension, Rapture and a bunch of other Cakewalk synths. sfz has subsequently been implemented by other synth vendors. At least that is my understanding of the history of rgc development.Davias wrote:Mmmh, already a good hint. Pentagon is an earlier development, a simple VA not like Rapture at all. Formatting a drive with junctions will remove the junctions from the drive being formatted but will not affect the drive the junctions point to... if that is your question. You could create a batch file to recreate them if you wish.Davias wrote: I was just wondering what was the concept behind Pentagon, is is a simple VA...

Thanks Scook, I guess I should do a batch indeed. All theses config things are sucking up my time

I think I will pass Pentagon after reading all the recommendations here.
I wonder what he (Rene) is doing now ? Still working with Cakewalk ? I would be curious about his latest creations

He is no longer with Cakewalk. I believe he as a linkedin page. It would be interesting to see a new rgc creation.Davias wrote:Thanks Scook, I guess I should do a batch indeed. All theses config things are sucking up my time![]()

Dimension comes in a little over 3 GB when installed, not that big IMO. I'd definitely grab it for $19, if you haven't already.

If you bought Rapture and would like it to sound a little less digital, you could try Antress Modern Analoguer http://antress.blogspot.com/ It transformed Z3ta+ into the synth I wanted.

I would have been nice if your post, or better yet, your blogger page had mentioned the plugins are only for Windows based machines.androidlove wrote:If you bought Rapture and would like it to sound a little less digital, you could try Antress Modern Analoguer http://antress.blogspot.com/ It transformed Z3ta+ into the synth I wanted.
Good Luck!
