Admittedly, I don't use a lot of 3rd party plugin fx and rarely chain plugins more than two deep per track. Could entirely be my workflow has just rarely encountered an issue other than the couple of times I did some manual adjust.

Good luck Theo. unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for a Mac alternative that wouldn't force you to completely relearn stuff, other than bitwig of course, but I don't even get excited about bitwig with the endless delay before release.

I think FL Studio 11 has a Mac version out or its in Beta , that might be an option .

IMO only number 5 is necessary.

Do you have "Reduced latency When Monitoring" unchecked? if so, you should uncheck it.

I just ran another test.

a delay on quarter beats on one track. 4 other tracks, each with three huge delay causing plugins on each, and all is synced up perfectly.

#5 is the exact same tip for automation. You can regard automation of a plug-in as working the same as a rhythmic effect. If you automate a parameter of a device that comes before a delay causing plug-in, it's fine. After and there is a problem. This is because automation is not compensated, just like the timing of a plug-in is not compensated.
