Buying a used Receptor V1.0 - questions on what problems to expect?

Hello, I am interested in buying a Receptor, Hardware V.1.0 Rev B. I am wondering what to expect as far as any technical issues using it, or if I will encounter any difficulty installing new plugins on this particular model/version? I think my main concern is that there would be licensing issues from the previous user.

Hoping someone with experience with this might be able to chime in. I'd like to pick one up used, but want to be sure of what I need to know going in to it, before I rue the day.

Thanks!

I can't directly respond to your question regarding Hardware V.1.0 Rev B, but I can tell you my experience purchasing a used Receptor 2 Pro Max. Your question "will I encounter any difficulty installing new plugins" is the right question to ask.

Here's what happened with my purchase. My unit originally came with Komplete 5 but had been upgraded and had Komplete 8 installed with the upgrade. The original owner sold to someone else who installed his license of Komplete 8. That owner deleted Komplete 8 (but not completely) from the unit before he sold it to me. I then installed Komplete 8 but had issues with the installation.

To make a long story short, I just sent my hard drive back to Muse to have it re-imaged with Komplete 8. It seems the registry is messed up.

Right now, I've spent $99 for one year of MuseCare support. It's going to cost $100 to image the drive (plus shipping cost both ways) and I'm paying them to install Ivory II American Concert D.

While this is a little frustrating to me one of to the benefits of them doing this is that I'll get all the 'free' content they provide with a brand new Receptor. Also, all the junk from previous owners will be gone and I won't have to go to the hassle of loading Komplete 8 and Ivory. I spent around 4-5 hours loading Komplete. It's a pain in the a$$. I'm more than happy to spend this money.

All that being said, keep these extra expenses in mind that I kind of overlooked when I researched my purchase. To fully use the Receptor you'll either need to have it hooked up to a computer (I can't) or you'll need a mouse, keyboard and monitor. I spent around $130 for those items and I'll also be purchasing a hard drive to back it up.

I'm approaching around $2000 for everything involved with buying a used Receptor (includes the Receptor, software, support, peripherals, etc.). Yes, that's a lot of money, but I can say that I played around with Komplete 8 enough to know that it will keep me inspired for years.

Glad I did it, but it has cost me a bit more than I originally planned.

Good luck.

Hi Bif, thank you for your comments! I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

I've been thinking about which model to go with, I feel like the Receptor 2 Pro might be a better route for me, to be at least a little future proof. I'd love to go with the new ones but am far too broke.

I just got off the phone with Muse, figured I'd bounce some questions off their sales people and the guy I talked to was super knowledgeable, and actually really cool answering my questions about getting a used unit. I guess the original first line, Rev. B units had a lot of issues with the power supplies burning out quickly. I guess the Rev. C units were faster, more cache and faster FSB, plus ran a lot cooler / better power supply. He was telling me that tons of huge name touring musicians still use the original Rev C units live.

But he did caution me as far as getting one used, and what to expect if trying to upgrade anything. The original line can't quite handle the newer plugins, since almost all manufacturers now develop their vst's to run using dual core processors at minimum, which the original receptor line cannot do. Apparently the Receptor 2 line and upwards have dual core (or more cores).

I still might consider an original Receptor Revision C if the price is right. I think it would still handle the bulk of things I'd like to do in a live setting! But it would be smarter getting one of the newer ones for sure.

zorkiii,

Glad to pass on the info. The bad news about the whole Receptor line is there's not lots of resources on available on the web. Activity on this forum is very light and limited.

If it helps you any, I paid $800 for my Receptor 2 Pro Max. This is by far the best deal I've found and I watched the web (ebay, craiglist, Guitar Center Used Gear, etc.) for over six months. I wanted a newer unit because I wanted to be able to run Ivory on it. This Receptor will do that with relative ease.

The 2 Pro Max is essentially the same processor, HD capacity and RAM as the VIP. In essence, I've saved around $1000 versus buying a new VIP.

My strong suggestion is dig real deep into researching what you want to run on your Receptor before you buy it to make sure it will do what you want it to do. I'm personally satisfied with what I'm going to be able to run (with Komplete 8 and Ivory) and I don't expect to buy any other VST's at this time.

Good luck with you search.
