Ha, bit the bullet and upgraded to X2 (from X1 Prod). I still had the "invitational upgrade offer price" in my cart, so it was a relatively cheap upgrade. I will however at this time draw a line in the sand for myself and say that if I don't end up using X2, and if I don't get akin to it's workflow, it'll be the last time I upgrade Sonar. Nothing against CW or Sonar, just, if it's not gelling, no point in pouring more cash into it for me.
Either way, good start, DL's going well (as oppose to X1 which was a nightmare to DL with timeouts and whatnot!

Thanks you guys, got there in the end.
My installation got messed up, installed the update into the folder which created another folder, i don't know why it asks for vst plugin folder twice but you have to select the same folder twice afaict (i don't know if this would break the expansions though). Anyway i extracted the expansions first and they're now showing up. I wanted to get this right before adding anymore cause of the multisamples getting placed all over, a lot of patches in the free expansions have files missing so i was double checking the steps.

FYI, you can skip downloading DimPro. It is identical to the version shipped with X1. Also, if you installed Beatscape be aware that the Loops and One Shots contain the Beatscape library. The Beatscape synth was dropped from X2.GeorgeZ wrote:Ha, bit the bullet and upgraded to X2 (from X1 Prod). Serious?! Why the hell would they include the beatscape content if beatscape isn't included in X2?! CW and their shenanigans... tut tut. Either way, I guess the one shots and loops are then the same as what shipped with X1 as well (or am I misunderstanding)?
Massive cheers for the heads up on DimPro, I have all the install files from X1 backed up, so that's great that it doesn't have to be DL'd again.

The Beatscape content are RX2 files that can be used just like any of the other RX2 content included with SONAR. If you really want to use Beatscape synth from X1, you are better off deleting the Beatscape library and creating a junction to the new Loops and One Shots audio directory. The X2 Loops and One Shots are reorganized to work better in the the media browser. You can keep the Beatscape library too, but it is a redundant 4GB of RX2 files. If you use a lot of loops (audio or MIDI) you will want to download the X2 version and remove the X1 loop content.

Already ran into an issue (Sonar noob problem probably). I put a one shot snare sample in to the playlist, directly, and for some reason X2 slices it (I think) right down the middle (can be seen in loop view), so the sample doesn't sound like the original one in the browser (maybe it's stretching the sample slightly to "fit" with the project temp, not sure). I can't remove the slice point in the loop view, so donno what the deal is with that. I remember X1 did that as well with one shots... never got that sorted. I fact, that's one of the reasons I gave up on X1.

I just went on the Cakewalk site, and Rapture is still $19.99, I thought the sale was over yesterday?

Sometimes, Cakewalk is a little slow to close a sale window, especially over a weekend.Examigan wrote:I just went on the Cakewalk site, and Rapture is still $19.99, I thought the sale was over yesterday?

Really nice synth.
Nothing like an ensoniq VFX, to my understanding so far though.
Yes it can sound a bit boxy in the presets, but if you go out of that register, it can whistle sweetly in the high end with the lovely reverb and filters. I'm sure it's just a case of getting to know it and playing around. It's not like it is lacking in features. I only got it because it was compared to the ensoniq. But it is nothing like it in my opinion. Then again, I've only been through maybe 50 or 60 patches. A lot of what made the ensoniq VFX sound the way it did was to do with the 24-bit FX. Unknown of at the time. Like the M1 before it, these helped to ameliorate the sound. Then again, the FX are excellent, so in theory, I could easily change my mind after getting into programming it.
Doesn't like playing with Reaper as some have noticed - very very unstable after just 4 or 5 tests. Best avoided. I'm win7-64 with Reaper-32.
Found an amazing trick in Energy XT2. Load a Rapture - any patch pretty much and then trigger it from a 1 bar midi loop in the seq with just quarter notes stretching each for a whole quarter of a bar continuously, so there's no gaps, if you follow me. Does it with other patterns but seems to work best with this.
Then go to options in Rapture (pin icon) and set it to work multi-timbrally. All of a sudden the patch will start chugging in sync to the sequencer, beautifully, rhythmically. WTF? The patch just transforms and comes alive, and what was an upper middle class mediocre synth becomes something so magical it could almost give Albino or Blue a run for it's money. 9 times out of 10 this trick worked for me. I have no idea what is going on, but it just works for some reason.
Render this out by say inserting an edison or a voxengo recorder on the track you are messing with and, well, record it, because when you save and reload the track it will be gone. Even setting it back to non-multi-timbral and resetting it will not work. This works just the once and then stops working. It's voodoo really, but never fails to give an otherworldly ethereal and astonishing effect. I tried to figure out what was going on, but as I have noted before, EnergyXT2 seems to break the laws of physics - cause and effect and time's arrow mean nothing to this program
.
Then again I didn't get much chance trying to recreate this in other DAWs, though I gave it a quick go - Reaper as I said, just balked after three instances of Rapture, but was solid before that.
It worked well in Podium though - no problems running a few instances. So I think it is quite tried and tested technology, but just use caution, because just like some of us humans, it is getting on a bit and is fallible.
And I had another anomaly when rendering out a drum and bass track I was doing in Studio One. Somehow the renders contained weird zipping artifacts or strange fx - I don't know - it was absolutely sonically amazing, but when the track reloaded it was gone. I know that renders can differ, and I have noticed this with Albino in XT2 that if you really really knock one off quickly (render) then the tail can be included at the start of the beat, even though, scientifically it is impossible because the note has not even sounded yet. How is that possible? Simple. You break the laws of physics. No biggie for XT2 - it does it all the time.
I'm not sure what is really going on with this synth. I tried to check out its multi-timbral capability, but it is academic whilst it will respond to different midi channels, it only has a stereo output, so not much use really. The six elements seem to represent the six multi-timbral channels. Then again a lot of very experienced users on the cakewalk forum say it is four part multi-timbral.
My head hurts.
And thanks to Jbravo for that absolutely wonderful skin he knocked up for his own use and shared with us users. It actually makes the readouts more legible for me on my system. Nice work. But just FYI, Comodo DNS will not let me access it. This is what it says:

So Comodo has accused you of Phishing. You might like to take it up with them. It is pretty rare to get one of these and should be taken seriously. I was sure it was a false positive, but used other more secure means to dl your file however. Like I said, just FYI.
As for the patches. There is a lot of free stuff available. These are the ones you want to get, if for no reason other than compatibility with future or third party soundsets - Cakewalk Expanders:
Install these first - follow the instructions - it can be a little weird:
Rapture Expansion Packs 1 & 2
http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/20067171
Then the first two off this page:
Rapture Muz3um and Twisted Oscillators -
http://patcharena.com/downloads/index.p ... abcf7a6cba
All of those are free so far, but for a few dollars more you can get these for a while at a large discount:
http://fisound.com/product/universal-120/
Well worth it as has been noted, not just for the array of wonderful patches, but for the hard work done on providing presets for the Envelope Generators and Step Sequencers and whatnot. Haven't heard them yet, but that seems to be the consensus so far.
I was going to buy them but, I spent my last on Rapture and it's a double dose of porridge for me this weekend. I'll pick them up a bit later on. Well worth it.
Rapture is still for sale for 15 quid if you want to pick it up. I wasn't in the market myself, but you know...

Edit:
Fixed Link to Patch Arena.
