Stepchild issues?

I tried StepChild last night and couldn't get it to play through a VSTi. It loaded and appeared fine, and I could drag/drop midi to Tracktion and the midi worked fine with other VSTis, but it made no sound when I tried it on the same channel as a synth. What am I doing wrong?

hmmm, it should work. You simply place the synth after stepchild, and ensure that the track is set to output to your audiocard vs. to a midi out.

I have not found a single VSTi in my collection that stepchild won't play. It'll play everything...

what synth are you trying to play? that way I can attempt recreating your problem.

I'm at work right now , but I tried with ImpOSCar, and Triangle 1 and 2. I'll try later tonight, but it seems I set it up correctly, with StepChild the first VST, then the synth, right? The midi it creates works fine if dragged to another track.

One thought, does the pattern need to be saved before it can be demoed? I didn't save it so it was still in the buffer, could that be what's wrong?

Try putting StepChild and the synth on separate tracks, with the StepChild track outputting to the synth track. Does it make a difference?

Maybe something is odd with your setup :?: I just tried Stepchild with Triangle II and it works fine. BTW, you don't have to save patterns to make it play.. cause it's always playing the buffer.

This one has me stumped... cos everything works as it should over here... :(

I still can't get it to work, this is 1.03a beta 6. Can you give me step by step instructions, including where it should be installed? It's currently in Tracktion's plug ins folder.

Can you tell me if this is where I should have gotten it: http://subminimal.org/stepchild/

You might want to check and see that stepchild is set to the right octave for the synth...I make that mistake more often than I should...

another option is to put stepchild in an empty audio clip within the track andf put the synth in the plug-in rack. I use this for drum fills and such. You just have to make sure that the clip is long enough to cover 1 full cycle of the sequencer or it won't play and if the clip doesn't overlap the beginning of the measure it won't play either....

OK, go figure. I walked away from the computer, came back, and now it's working. Weird, I didn't change anything.

Sorry, this is just too tempting:

Yeah, I know. I did tech support myself in the past.

It's working just fine now though. I like it much better than Reason's step sequencer, it works very nicely with Tracktion. Since switching to the PC, I'm finding less and less reason to open Reason. I guess that's a good thing.

Yes, StepChild kicks ass.

Though I'd like to change the way the whole buffer management works. Particularly, I'd like to be able to switch between buffers to quickly A/B them without having to remember to right-click-to-save between each change (I've lost so many patterns that way!). Also, I'd like to be able to save "profiles" of channel/notes/octave settings with names, so that I could save one set for my drum sampler say, with names like "bass" or "snare" and re-use it easily.

Yeah, that sounds good. I'd like to see that. I haven't tried using StepChild as a drum programmer yet, but I imagine it would work well enough, better maybe if there were a custom version specifically for drums. Maybe with stock drum names in the GUI so it could remain simple, like 'B, S, HH Cl, HH O, CR, RD, something like that, in place of/along with the key names. I dunno. Sounds sloppy the way I explain it.

Does anyone think that someday stepchild will be implemented within tracktion, so that we could have "add step sequencer track"?

Also, is there a way to change the length of the steps or something along those lines?
