My suggestion would be to change the word 'Best' to 'Favorite' or even 'Most popular' in all of your categories.

I was thinking the same thing at first, but then realized that by calling it a "Readers Choice" award, it's already pretty explicit that it's a favorites/popularity contest.

Ok... hmm.. how about then using '2013 KVR Readers Choice' in front of the category instead of BEST?

If a winner ever uses this in their marketing, the consumer will see it is specifically it is a readers choice. Likely it will get used simply 'BEST Instrument' otherwise.. leaving it up to interpretation as who how that was determined.

Good point. Personally, I hate "best" this or that classifications when it comes to something as subjective as software. So, like you, I have a little discomfort over using that term in these categories.

Seriously, using the term best is going to cause some consternation amongst the KVR masses. We are somewhat of an opinionated crowd here.
"Most popular" is probably safer too, considering that KVR has, um, paid advertisements from competing software and hardware companies.

I have favorites in every category, but I don't know whether they're the "best," especially since I haven't tried every item in the world

Also, given the answer to "What's the best..." is usually, "Well, it depends on...", using the term "Best ..." in an award seems questionable at best and incorrect and/or misleading at worst.

Valid point - nominations should be relevant i.e. not pisstakes, or outdated abandonware (unless the category it bEst Plugin Pisstake, or best old crusty plug)
