I currently have ... Reason, a day has 24 hours and I prefer to concentrate on a few instruments.

Didn't see that, with Reason you got Malström and you should thus be well covered for granular options I think.

I do have an advantage with Reason, and that is I have a Panorama P4 Keyboard (That means I can shut down the screen computer from time to time, and just mangle everything from the keyboard, and I love to do this sometimes).

Malstrom is the synth I use the most out of Reason; but I think it is missing other options like grain size, grain density and playback direction (loop forwards, forward-backward etc). Ive experiment with this options with the Granular Synth engine in Abletons Warping Engine and it offers different possibilities for sound design.

I still think Malstrom is great, and there is a lot experiment in there, but at firs sight doesnt seem to be an ideal tool to dive deep into the granular realm.

They just released Live 9, I think it will take a while until they offer a sale. Anyhow, thanks for the advice, due to the fact that I am used to work in Ableton seems to be a good idea to upgrade by the time I get a good offer to Ableton 9 and get immersed in the granular environment.

reaktor is on special at the min,andfor granular it canot be beaten! the user library is full of ensembles as well as the ones included with the program

zebra while being pretty awesome a a synth, graular isnt something i associate it with.


alchemy is also a powerhouse of sample manipulation
for this reason id choose alchemy over omnisphere, if you want to load your own samples that is.

if you search the effects forum for "hourglass" you can be having granular fun within the net 10 mins

Another vote for Hourglass. It's a standalone program so no using it within your host, but it's the single best granular processor out there at the moment to me.

Btw, speaking of granular synths, has someone managed to get this running on Windows 7/Vista? http://www.kvraudio.com/product/grainz_by_sknote I do the steps required to make it run, by putting the additional files either in the system folder, or in the plugin folder, but neither seems to work. Always gave me an error message that one of the files wasn't found.

good god!
the plugandmix download system blows. It's one of those 'universal' installers that can install all or any combination of their existing plugins. Only problem is the installer is ~550mb per format. So that's a 1.1gb download if you want to install the VST & AU of one plugin. The actual size of the plugin is approx 18mb. Surely there's a more sensible way of distributing singles. I suppose I shouldn't complain about a freebie, but some folks have to pay for their bandwidth by the MB.


As for your query Mario, I think you should go with Reaktor/Komplete. You don't have to get into instrument/fx creation. The included Reaktor factory library and also the Reaktor user library has many excellent instruments and fx already. There are probably a few threads here on KVR listing people's favourites. There are also some excellent 3rd party commercial ensembles. Granular stuff is one of Reaktor's main strengths.

As for Komplete, well I'm not sure where the cheapest place to get it is at the moment, but it has to be one of the best value packages you can possibly get. Even if you only used Kontakt & Reaktor it would still represent excellent value for money. You can explore the other instruments/fx in your own time

You are tempting me to get Komplete. Im on a macbook pro, 120 Gigs SSD, and 750 GB HDD,

Only 80 Gigs left on the main SSD, where I guess Im supposed to install the Komplete Software, and the sample library can go into the HDD, but still I think it will probably fill up the space on my SSD.

Is it possible to buy komplete and install selected products from the package. At least for the moment, so when I get a bigger pc then I can install everything.

I know it comes in a DVD and I dont have a DVD drive, so I would have to burn the images on USB files from another PCand then transfer to my computer, and Ive heard that Installing Native Instruments software is complicated.

I can get Komplete 7 for about $250, which includes rRaktor 5, Kontakt 4, Absynth, Fm8, Massive, Guitar Rig4, and other stuff Im not really interested in.

Nope. It won't. If you install the samples on the HDD, you don't need much space on the SSD at all. I haven't measured it, but it surely can't be much more than a gigabyte or so. This is easily configurable with the Komplete installer.

Yep. But, as I said above, you won't need to do that as you can install everything quite easily without putting much of a dent on your 80gb free SSD space - so long as the samples are going on your 750gb HDD.

Nah. it's not complicated. It's time consuming {for K7 anyway}. That's the only downside and it's because of the time it takes to move data from the DVDs. Though after Komplete 7 the data comes on flash drives {for installation purposes only, not for normal HDD usage} so that makes installation a lot quicker and less of your attention is required.

I'm using Komplete 7 too. Awesome, awesome package. Impossibly good value for money. NI can have my babies. I haven't upgraded Komplete yet because I have been waiting for upgrades to more of the core applications, or a killer deal on a Komplete Ultimate upgrade. Kontakt 5 is the only thing I'm really 'jonsing' for, but imo any Komplete from 7 up is a 'must-have' and if you can get a good price you should jump on it
