Hi there,

unfortunately I got this with Logic Pro 9.1.8 on OS 10.6.8...

Damn! I was looking forward to checking this out. Will be great to have a replacement for Logic's tired and cranky old EXS24 sampler ;)

Cheers

tenekboy, the Logic issue might be related to the naming conflict that was updated yesterday (and is in the service release 2.2.1). As you notice, its not the validation that is broken, it is logics database handling that fails to store the fact that all was well.
Please check the updated version to see if it help (it works fine in Logic 9 for me, but...).
If all else fails, remember, you can always force logic to use the instrument by clicking "enable" in the AU list (twice).

If I hold down one key and hit other keys the sound will "trill" between the notes. This normally happens on Legato mode. This does not happen on Legato mode, it never plays the key I am holding down again. Is this normal?
This indeed is weird. BUT - mono mode can and it should trill between notes if you hold one note then whack others. Legato should do the same, but without retriggering the envelopes. That's where the difference lies. The way it is now, it is definitely bugged.

Let me also point out that sustain pedal "eats out" the retriggers. This is not good at all.

Any comments about this, Calle? :)

I just downloaded & installed AU version 2.2.1 and, like tenekboy, I get the same validation failure (also using Logic 9, OS 10.6.8). But I can't force Logic to use it using the 'click twice' approach. It simply keeps trying to re-validate, then eventually Logic hangs.

TX16Wx requires OSX 10.7 or higher. And the next build will require 10.8, for reasons I will explain in a blog entry soon. Don't blame me. Blame Apple.

I'm busy blaming Apple for their pathetic midi implementation re: step seq's & arps. But this is going on my List.

Yeah, I am still curious about this as well. :)

Be careful what you expect from semantics.
This is how the modes are defined to work:
  • Mono mode will play at most one note at a time. If you hit a key when another is playing, the voice will be stolen but _not_ retriggered (only wave data might change). If you release the key, it will switch back to the last key held. (trill, as you call it)
  • Legato mode will play any number of released notes _but_ if you trigger a note while another is held, it will be stolen and not re-triggered similar to Mono mode. The point is that you can play a staccato with a long-release sound and get the lingering notes, then play a legato by doing just that.
This mode does indeed not jump back to the previously held note, and maybe it should. For consistency. Not 100% sure.
  • Poly - it just plays everything.
If you want the behaviour of Mono but with re-triggering, you can use a choke group to get this effect. This will effectively force stealing of any playing voice. This will not jump back to held notes though, nor should it.

No, it is not. It's just not fully consistent with your semantics/expectations. The correct phrase is "not really what I expected". Though I do somewhat agree that the legato mode should also "trill", but in the exact same way as mono mode (see other post about the semantic difference between modes).

This I do not understand? The only thing the sustain pedal does is make a voice ignore note-off until such time that the sustain is released. All other trigger semantics ignore this difference and treat the notes just as if it was actually held (which I think is that one would expect). What does "eat out" mean here?

Legato mode should definitely jump back to previously held note. The only difference between the two modes should be: Mono mode retriggers the envelopes, Legato mode does not retrigger the envelopes. This is how it works in pretty much all sampler workstations I've ever encountered!

Both modes use last note priority with retriggering the previously held note. This is happening disregarding the state of sustain pedal - which means that the retrigger to previously held note STILL happens EVEN IF you hold the sustain pedal. This is not happening in TX16Wx right now. Yet any Korg and Kurzweil that I've ever played behave exactly like that. ;)

Try to trill in mono mode without sustain pedal. Then try to trill with sustain pedal. Doesn't sound the same. It should sound the same, as all my experience with hardware workstations has proven.

Why are you using the sustain pedal if you don't want it to have any effect?

(And as a principle I only emulate Yamaha, Roland and _maybe_ E-mu behaviours) :-)

When playing a screaming shredding monophonic lead, it's to have perfect legato without effort. ;) Sustain pedal holds down the notes indeed (so I can play staccato if I want but they'll be connected), but it doesn't eat out the retriggers, so I can shred away without worrying about notes dropping out when I do any jumps and over-under fingerings.

Perfect audio example: https://www.box.com/shared/k0892h1myy (first with sustain, then no sustain, then agin with sustain).

It's just became a behaviour I can't really live without. If a synth doesn't behave like this, I don't use it.

I am glad you can explain it better than me :)

I do it all the time where I will hold down 1 note with my left hand, and then play other notes all over the keyboard with my right hand. When it re-triggers this can kind of go on forever instead of dying out like it currently does.
