Not saying it's a bad thing, especially in genres where effects define the genre itself (space music and film music don't really make much sense without reverb at least). It's just doesn't really show the character of the synth. I could throw CS-80V in there any no one would ever know.
I don't think so. But if you have original cs80 and arturia cs80-v it's possible to do blind tests to prove the point.

No you're not.
Never owned neither CS80 nor CS80v, but according to demos, they are sounding far away from each other.
Murderous duck!

That is a truly beautiful piece of music, and for me it's a superb demo of the synth in question.

Kudos.

He actually lives not far from me and I've been in contact with him about some servicing, so when I do finally meet him I'm going to give him a huge (and probably for him very uncomfortable) man hug.

To be fair this track was never intended to be a demo of the CS 80. It's just a track I did for the hell of it. So yes the use of effects is heavy because I like it that way :). Plus my 80 is nothing like a normal 80 so would give a false comparison. Just as a side note for those interested two of the sounds used in this track were put into the memories by Vangelis himself when he used it on his latest album. So now they are there permanently set for ever as god has touched my 80. Lol

I agree completely. I'm also not convinced that you can make a CS-80V sound like that. Well, I don't think that "I" could.

That's wonderful! But which two sounds, at which times? :hyper:

Making a CS80v sound *exactly* like that (=pass the null test) would be a tall order.

However, when presented with a blind choice between audio from a real analog synth and an emulation most people can't reliably tell which is which. And the many guess the synth threads show that even supposedly distinctive sounding synths aren't distinctive enough to be recognisable.

Had the above piece of music been presented without any description, few people, if any, would have guessed what it was (the style rather than the sound would be the big clue). And if the same piece were replicated on the CS80 and CS80v and people asked to identify the 'real' synth, about half of the guesses would be wrong.

It's a really great piece of music, I found it inspirational. Reminds me of why I love synths (and space music).

Peace,
Andy.

ME80 is a much better emulation, even without reverb, it's just has more character.

I agree, ME80 has captured more of the character of the 80. This shows up especially in the guitar 1 and 2 presets. They contain the most elements of the waveforms and filters of the synth.

The real problem with emulating the CS80 is not the sound though. The true character of the synth comes from the touch control, so unless you have access to a key mech that has the same response as the 80's the sound will never be spot on. To make matters worse I have found that after restoring over 300 CS80's now there is quite a significant difference in sound between early 1000 to 1300 s/n models and the the newer ones ending at about 1800. The changes to the vco and filter ic's not to mention the keyboard damper system fitted to the ones made after 1695 s/n onwards changed even more characteristics.

Changed for the better, worse or just different? And which serial range would be your favorite? (Not that I am in the market cause I will just wait for Urs to make a digital version that will be good enough for me!)

Post

For me it would be early vcf's and late vco's. The later the better. My CS80 uses CS70 ones and you can't get later than that. ;)
