Hi - I am totally new to creating music with software. However, I have been making techno for decades with hardware so I understand what I want the software to do, just have a hard time communicating with it. I have discovered some free VST's that I would like to try out, but whenever I "download" them, they go to a temp folder, and I can not seem to locate them through the Mulab menus? For example if I try to replace an instrument with it, I can not see the VST anywhere in the dropdown that loads? Like I said, I am so new to this, so I am sure that this is basic stuff, I just cant seem to do it :/

Any help would be fantastic! Thanks In advance! Cheers!

On OSX a VST plugin is a shared library normally with extension ".vst". On Windows a VST plugin is a DLL normally with extension ".dll".

There are several ways to start using a VST plug-in in MuLab:

* You can drag-drop the VST plugin file on a rack slot or MUX deep editor.

* You can add VST plugins via the main MULAB menu -> Manage VST Plug-Ins

* Known VST plugins will be available in the plugin list when you click an empty rack slot or add a module in the MUX deep editor. And if the plugin you want to use is not yet listed there then choose "Browse for plug-in..." in that popup list.

You might be downloading them, but are you installing them? They'll all either come as installers, which you have to run to put everything into an Appropriate Location(*) or 'raw' plugins (eg .dll files on Windows) which you'll have to manually drag into an Appropriate Location(*).

(*) Youmay also have to set up your host, eg MuLab, to look in the Appropriate Location for plugins, but it almost certanly a default, so you might as well use that as your default for installing to.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! They are definitely .dll files, so I will try dragging them into a fresh rack. That just seemed to easy to be the solution. Hopefully that works. Thanks again! :D

If they're going to a TEMP folder then you need to specify the download location when you download the VST. Easiest is Desktop, but it can become cluttered. Create a VST folder on Desktop and save them there.

If they need to be installed, then install to Desktop/VST for ease. Are you new to computers in general or just DAW's?

Once they are in a central location just drag and drop to MuLab.

@ sl23 - I am new to DAW's. Been using a computer for autoCAD for 10 years now at work. I decided to go the software route recently to conserve space. So far, so good. I do plan on hooking up my hardware studio again in the future, after we move to a bigger house, but that might be years away.. In the mean time, I am getting into Mulab, as the price was right, and the reviews are quite good overall. I think I have a good grasp of most of the basic functions, just a little tricky getting a VST to load. I am at werk as I type this, so I have yet to try the suggestions from others yet. I will when I go home. So, you are saying to save the VST to desktop, as oppose to open it in a DAW? Once the VST is on my desktop, I can then drag it to a new rack in mulab? Will the VST be in the available VST's in the Mulab dropdown menu afterwards? Thanks,

Most convenient way in my opinion is to have one folder where you put (or install) all .dll files. Normally a location you create like "C:\VstPlugins".

After you have put those there you have to point your DAW (in this case MuLab, but every DAW works that way) to that location and let it "scan" those dll files so that it can put this location in its internal "database". Then it will remember that every time you open your DAW.

No need for drag/drop from a cluttered desktop, etc.
No band limits, aliasing is the noise of freedom!

You need to save the download to a location that's easy to access, I suggested Desktop as you can't get easier than that ;-)

VST's can be d/l as zip files, setup files or just a dll file. Depending what the VST d/l consists of depends how you organise it. If it's a dll file on it's own, or with some other stuff for graphics and patches etc, just place it in a folder where you can access it easily.

VST's that consist of an exe file are setup files. Just double click and run through setup process. When asked where to install the files to, select an easily accessible folder such as Nielzie suggested. Some setups require you to specify two folders, one for the actual VST dll file and another for the associated content as mentioned above.

Personally, I use UniExtract on every setup file to check to see if it really needs to be installed. I prefer not to install if I can help it. That way it doesn't mess your system up, VST's can be better organised and stored on removable media. Remember though, if you try this, it doesn't work on all VST's, though few free VST's that I've come across won't work this way and I've d/l around 500 or so! But that's just me and it's optional ;-)

If you do get adventurous and try UniExtracting Setup files, be aware, though it doesn't actually install all the stuff, sometimes just running VST's causes them to create files, folders or registry entries in system folders. If you require backup of these for some reason, you have to go hunting! Mostly though they use these folders:
ProgramData
ProgramFiles
AppData
User folders

I don't think it's necessary to back any of this up as the VST creates it on first run. But this is probably going too far for your needs :-)

Just a wild guess: are you working from open ZIP files and try to use things from there?
I just had the experience with the Temp folder :)

Thanks again for the replys guys! :hihi: After I downloaded the vst, I was able to find it, however when I tried to select it, it was "Incompatible VST" ? I'm guessing it might have to do with the fact that I am running 64 bit mulab and the VST is 32?? Anyway, not the end of the world, I was just trying to get any vst to load into mulab, so as to know that I was able to do it. I have been trying VSTs from the site http://www.vst4free.com/ (http://www.vst4free.com/). Are there any other sites that are better, or offer decent free VST synths? So far I have not been able to load a single one. I am thinking about investing in a decent soft synth actually, anybody have good experiences using Arturia stuff with MuLab? Particularily arp2600 or their minimoog? Cheers! :)

Have you explored the synthesis options built into MuLab?

Just type free VST's into google and some good sites popup ;-) I d/l around 500 all together, most are crap, but there are tons of good synth's and fx out there to keep you going for a long time!
