Dear fellow Bazille alpha users, I figured these little usability/playability tweaks for Bazille should be mentioned in this (Bazille) thread as well (as they may easily get lost or overlooked in yet another thread anticipating the release of Diva 1.3 and Satin).

Following a hint by Urs and some suggestions by pdxindy, I slightly tweaked the script for the (default) theme (for Bazille 0.6), in order to add the following options (more or less copied from Diva) which apparently were already working 'under the hood' but did not have any GUI controls yet:

Located in the top right corner of the GUI (next to Revision number):

- A switch to enable multi-core support (on/off), which (afaik) on some, but not all systems may enable better performance, such as a higher polyphony (YMMV);

Image

Located on the 'Trimpots' panel (which now actually *has* trimpots, yay!) - and don't worry, the ugly yellow outlines don't appear on the skin:

Image

- An option for voicing, i.e. maximum amount of voices to use (few, medium, many);

- An option for voice stacking (1 to 8 voices), which can be used for unison (with slight detuning between voices) and/or one-finger chords;

- 8 trimpots to adjust the individual tuning offset for stacked voices (from -24.00 to +24.00 semi-tones). You can also choose 'StackVoice' as a polyphonic modulation source, e.g. for panning in the 'Outputs' panel, in the LFOs (Amp Mod, Rate Mod), and/or in the ADSR envelopes (Level, Rate):

Installing these tweaks should be easy: simply download this adapted version of Bazille.txt (and unzip it); on a Mac, it should be located in this folder (you may also want to rename or back up the original Bazille.txt file):

Code: Select all

/Library/Application\ Support/u-he/Bazille/Scripts/Bazille.txt
Hope this makes playing with the current version of Bazille even more enjoyable to some of you brave alpha users, and waiting for v1.x (which will no doubt include *much* prettier versions of these controls) slighty more endurable! :)

Confirmed that this really works. More noticeable than in Diva in my observation.

Thanks

Seems like Reaper is really not benefitting from u-he's multicore code at all. In fact, CPU usage goes UP with this enabled... :(

It certainly does... It opens up a whole new world! Hallelujah!! Amen!!

I read somewhere that Reaper doesn't report CPU usage "properly".

Iirc it only reports CPU usage on audio threads (and ignores e.g. GUI stuff), but that should not make a difference in this case. Fwiw, I also only see my CPU going up on my 'old' Core2Duo MBP, but I assumed that's just a limitation given the specs of my system. Does the multi-core work as expected for you on the same system/config when using Diva, ED? (Perhaps try changing REAPER's Anticipative FX processing settings in Prefs?)

In any case, if this even works for only a single user, it was worth the additional bit of effort over the stacked & detuned voices stuff, which I'm very happy with myself. :) Btw, I think Diva could also use two more stack voice detuning trimpots...

Great sounds! :)

:idea: Crazy idea for unregistered demo nag in Bazille: play some of those short repetitive little organ tunes every couple of minutes, like is often done at sports matches in the US. That should be sufficiently annoying for Bazille's target audience. :D

Is it too late for trying the 0.6 version?
I can't find the download link. :cry:

@ ch00rd:
Thank for the mods!! It certainly does add a new dimension to Bazille. :)

There is an architectural change in the hardware somewhere along the line that's necessary for multi-core with Diva & ACE. (IIRC related to sharing memory across cores?  Parallel processing is one thing, concurrent memory is another ...)

This is working just like ACE/Diva on the more recent side of that, AFAIK.  Thanks so much for this!

The download link on this page still works for me. I think there may be a fresher revision of 0.6 somewhere as I have downloaded one that says Bazille1456 while this one says Bazille1331, but I can't find any link for it now.

I have an i5-2380P quad-core here (Sandy Bridge), and it's the same behaviour in ACE, Bazille and Diva. I believe it might be because of Reaper's anticipative processing... but that thing is TOO GOOD to be turned off! :)

That would be Ableton. :P Reaper's CPU usage reporting is the closest to OS' resource monitor, actually.
