Preset sharing?

Just a quick question for Urs. I run a collaborative learning project at another forum, and the current project is a synth based piece.
My level of patch creation is crappy designer from scratch, but not bad with tweaking presets to the piece.

Specifically, if I tweaked some of the presets that come with Zebra, could I share the two-three patches with the group? Meaning post them on the forum. Obviously they would still contain the original name with tweaked at the end, and I wouldn't change the author's name.

Ethically I wouldn't do this with a third party library, unless given permission, but the factory patches seem like they would be ok since they come with the program.

Another philosophical question: at what percentage of changes is a preset no longer considered a preset? For example, I added a Sine wave osc to Holla's War Drum patch. To me that is no where near enough to consider it a new patch, but tweaking the arp, changing filters, and various other settings seems like it would enough.

12 parameter changes

This is not just a problem with the concept of synth patches but of intellectual property in general. That's not to say I wish to forefit all of my IP rights out of principle, because we live in a society in which one needs to make a living off of them :hihi:. But when we finally create heaven, if we ever do, you can bet nobody will be worrying about this crap :P

When it comes to tweaking patches, I don't think you're ever creating anything new in this case, just blending what's already been put there, so that it fits into your own context better. Change the waveform, add a slower attack and release to send it to the back of your mix, alter the cutoff or envelope amount...

Patch design, especially in modular-type synths, is about the structure and routing, and that takes a completely different set of skills beyond turning the knobs and listening to favourable changes.

If you go beyond turning knobs and hence merely "shading" the structures already in place, you're getting into the realm of creating a new patch off of an old one and it then becomes a collaboration.

I have no plans to share any third party patches and unless I hear from Urs, or Howard, that it's ok to share my tweaked factory patches I won't share them either. The learning project was designed to focus on synths and it would have been good to be able to share them. I guess I'll have to just list the changes I made.

Just curious about presets because it's such a weird area.

I doubt it will be a problem to share tweaked factory presets... every Zebra user already has them so what problem could there be?

Reminds me, is it my imagination or does one of the patches previewed in the Dark Zebra demo vid - "Lonely with Windchimes" - share similarities with this patch of mine (compare the windchimes/icicles effects)?

Not a big deal, but if it's a modified version of my patch I'd like to know, out of curiosity.

Anyone with Zebra HZ?

@Darthmorphling: Are you talking about tweaking commercial presets, then sharing?

It doesn't look like it. If it is, it's heavily modified. The structure is quite different from your preset and About the only thing I saw that's similar is both use a square wave on OSC 1.

I'd be incredibly surprised if Howard would do that -- he's given others credit (Billstei in Blubbery thing) and copyright gets a lot more serious when making presets for a big name like Hans.

(Both your and HH/HZ's presets are beautiful in their own right. I forget about all the gems that can be found from the patch contests...)

Care to share what the forum is? Sounds interesting.

I wouldn't share any 3rd party patches. I had just tweaked one of the presets from the factory patches. We are all synth newbs in the project and the idea was to create a synth focused film cue. I quickly realized my patch skills are pretty pathetic and found some inspiration with that patch. After tweaking it I liked it even more.

Yes, I've got ZHZ... nice patch hakey - high-five for very similar "solution" (the top 3 modules in the lefthand lane are the same in both). BTW 1) I didn't edit your patch 2) I think I would have asked the same question if our roles were reversed!

Now worries. :)
