You mean it isn't?!

Matching certain emotions or "qualities" with particular scales, keys, chords or notes is an exercise in futility (along the same lines as astrology). They are all subjective anyway, completely dependant on context and are rendered meaningless in equal temperament.
Unfamiliar words can be looked up in my Glossary of musical terms.

this is exactly the reason why I dont teach and tell people I dont have the teaching gene. Those things are subjective, they are quite personal as well and as such I could never teach them because no one is ever going to feel it, hear it or see it as I do...that's kind of a given going into music if you ask me. Often it is said that people express themselves through their music and I am one. I understand that we can express ourselves without an audience (like say when you're all alone and you stub your toe...you do express yourself :hihi: ) and it's quite fine to play to express yourself to yourself.

But you're right, in theory it's not very practical let alone it's hard to dictate the emotions of a musician which imo is what sometimes gives us very interesting interpretations of the same piece. But assign them to certain keys as a matter of rule so to speak is tough, I did write a song that I used Dm because it is said to be emotional and the song actually did exactly what I intended it to do...but imo that may have had more to do with my confidence based on a false sense of security that Dm will be emotional.

BUT I NEVER SAID THIS WAS A JOKE ;)
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Hink,
I'll retract my previous statement directing it at you. It should have been a non directed statement. I'm sorry I was wrong to point the finger at you.

I'll even give into the Dm being the saddest of all keys within the qualifier that. It is used in a lot of sad pieces. That however as I've stated already is a matter of "If it works for you" If it works for someone to conjure up the emotive value of sadness then in fact that person may indeed use it as impetus and either consciously or unconsciously direct the emotive value into.
