The great thing about apple products is they tend to have great resale value, which kinda offsets some of the larger initial layout. The refurbed ipad4 route is a great option. You get a refurb, a years guarantee, the possibility of another couple of compatible IOS updates and a much better resale value if you choose to upgrade later oncryophonik wrote:the iPad3 is probably the best option, unless you can wait for the iPad5 to be released and look for a deal on an iPad4.
Ipad2 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and is still pricey. It doesn't have retina which i feel makes a difference (even if it does swallow up most of the extra resources). It will also get a nice chunk of iOS7 compatibility
