The great thing about apple products is they tend to have great resale value, which kinda offsets some of the larger initial layout. The refurbed ipad4 route is a great option. You get a refurb, a years guarantee, the possibility of another couple of compatible IOS updates and a much better resale value if you choose to upgrade later on

Ipad2 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and is still pricey. It doesn't have retina which i feel makes a difference (even if it does swallow up most of the extra resources). It will also get a nice chunk of iOS7 compatibility

So far sketching stuff on iPad and working on it later on a proper DAW hasnt worked for me. Best apps i've found that are actually better to use mobile than a laptop with a proper DAW have been Figure and maybe Maschine(no ipad version). Figure is cool to use as its designed to be controlled by touch, but it's real pain to get anything useful out of it to continue working on later.

If id seriously want to waste my money on touch based music making id prob check out FLStudio Groove.

Btw, Best mobile music making platform for me has been Renoise on a slim laptop. Even minilaptops run it smoothly. Win&Linux&Osx.
