New upgrade prices for Cubase

One interpretation of SJ_Digriz's analysis would be that Steinberg is therefore trying to deliberately price themselves out of the hobby market and start inching up toward the prestige end of the market. And even if that doesn't work, then perhaps reduced support costs make up for the slightly smaller customer base.

For hobbyists, there are the "smaller" versions, Artist and Elements, which are quite reasonably priced. I could upgrade to Artist for 149 for example. Anyway, the upgrade prices for the big versions are too much for me too. But then, if there's ever going to be a point when i grow out of the version i have (Elements), then there's enough alternatives... Studio One looks very promising for example.

They'd better stop treating their customers like beta testers like they did with cubase 7, in this case.spirit wrote:One interpretation of SJ_Digriz's analysis would be that Steinberg is therefore trying to deliberately price themselves out of the hobby market and start inching up toward the prestige end of the market.

It's the old "Why does a dog lick it's own ass?" thing, because it can.VitaminD wrote:Out of curiosity (since we've already killed this thread)... what do you think the reasons were for Apple dropping the price of Logic? It seems, at least on the surface, they could have kept the price to Cubase standards since there was no one else bluffing with their 500 dollar-ish pricing scheme.. perhaps wanting to make it more appealing? perhaps because it is Apple-only (and thus less market) ??
They did it because they can, because it doesn't hurt them financially, because they have the online store infrastructure in place to not need boxes and CD's and Sweetwater and FedEx, because whatever money they make from Logic, they don't need it anyway.
Apple, like Cockos, is an anomaly in the DAW market, not the norm. They're a multi-billion dollar corporation who also happens to make a audio workstation. Logic is not - by any stretch of the imagination - having any real impact on their bottom line, their profit margin. OTOH, Cubase and Nuendo are Steinberg's bread and butter. Yahama owns Steinberg and probably subsidizes them to some degree, but if they start regularly losing millions of dollars they'd almost certainly eventually get amputated.
Apple could pretty much give Logic away mostly for branding in the market and not miss a step. They pretty much already are at $199.

Quick Q: Does Logic have Retrospective MIDI Record (or "Score Log" in FL Studio). It's the main way I compose and capture ideas and, given I'm moving to Mac, I might as well look into Logic in lieu of the new Steinberg pricing structure.

A x.0 to x.5 is $50/e50 for a few years now. Don't expect 7 to 7.5 to be free, it won't.

I'm a bit confused here:
When I log in, Steinberg.net tells me that:
Upgrading from 6.5 to 7.0 = $150 USD
Upgrading from 6.0 to 7.0 = $200 USD
AFAIK, this is what it's been, more or less, since SX2. Is it just the EU that's affected by a higher price?
Also, a couple of years back, didn't Steinberg choose to take a huge haircut on the buy in price of Cubase (i.e. full retail, not upgrades). And IIRC, this was heralded as ushering in a new, lower cost playing field for all involved. For those who don't remember, Cubase used to cost $800 USD or so, street.
Cheers

They just split the price, changing from 200e for c4->c5 to 150e for c6->c6.5 + 50e for c6.5->c7. Did not change nothing to the final price.ZINO wrote:v.4.5budweiser wrote:?TheoM wrote: I really do hope that that silly 6.0 to 6.5 paid upgrade was a one off thing and the entire version 7 cycle are free updates, just like they always were.

The OP link took me to an EU version of the site. I couldn't find another USD version other than the current pricing. Thus the confusion.ZINO wrote:"Steinberg would like to inform you about several pricing adjustments that will take place from October 15, 2013."BERFAB wrote:I'm a bit confused here:
Well, if the price is going up, that does suck.

So now I have the choice of buying an update from 5.5 I don't really want now for 249.-, buy one later when or if I feel i want it for 299.- or get a crossgrade for S1 Pro for ~280.- (and spend weeks changing my complete workflow...).
In hindsight, why did I ever byy the big Cubase version??? (Well, i know, because of variaudio, still really cool). Or why didn't I get the update for 6.5 when I still could... Bollocks...
(Yes I know I can get reaper for 60.-, but frankly I cannot get around the mid-90s shareware looks... So I am a snob, sue me...)
Does someone know whether Cubase 5.5 is still running/supported on windows 8?
