Then enjoy the choices and don't worry. SONAR is still available through worldwide retailers on DVD and download. That's not going to change.

Will downloads from Cakewalk and/or DVD be tied to a steam-account when installed?

Honestly I hate Steam, especially if some sort of online connection is needed in order for Sonar to work. From time to time the Steam servers are down in which case I can't play the one single game I have from Steam.

As long as non-Steam use is an option I suppose everything is okay for me...

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way although it has come up a few times. Maybe we can figure that out with Steam in the future.

SONAR isn't even on Steam. But the Cakewalk products that are up there now all work in Steam offline mode. You can also purchase them from non-Steam sites. Again, I can't stress this is just another distribution method to reach customers, not the new sales strategy for Cakewalk.

KVR - The looney asylum for copy protection hysteric patients. :hihi: Seriously, i think Steam is one of the most hassle free copy protections there is. As Arossa said, most software, once activated, is also available offline, so you don't have to be online the whole time... another great thing about Steam is that you can automatically update your software. No more manually checking for updates needed. And you can access your software on different computers, it just has to be authorised for Steam usage. No more physical copies of your software needed and so on. I think Steam has many advantages, and i would like to see more audio software distributed that way.

How will the authorization work now? Serial? or Steam? is the steam part a requirement?

I am really excited about the updated Notation Editor

just asking about authorization. not format

edit

I need to find out exactly what Steam is :)

Well, Arossa said Sonar isn't on Steam, which means you won't have anything to do with Steam when installing it. If a app is on Steam, you buy it, over Steam or in a store, when you bought it on Steam, it will already be registered in your account, you only need to download it, and it'll be installed. If you bought a physical copy in a store, you will have to fill in the serial key in your steam client, and it'll register your copy in your library. Then you either install it from the physical media, or you download it from the Steam servers.

FWIW

Whenever I record with Sonar X2, my timing is pretty much how it should be. When I do the same thing on Cubase AI5, I'm always about a 16th note ahead. Not sure what's up with Cubase, but because of that issue, I'm stickin' with the X2.

Post

I'm a bit confused why Cakewalk employees are communicating with the outside world about X3 more on KVR then their own forums? I can only assume it's because KVR represents new potential customers whereas most of the folks on the CW forums have already drank the Kool-Aid and will buy the upgrade regardless.

With all of the rampant complaining and paranoia on kvr, why hasn't someone with artistic skills created an 'Eat a Snickers' meme for KVR yet? :hihi:

I wrote a long essay on how it's not really imaginary problems, with examples, and how the looney would be in accepting the same thing happening to you again. But we at KVR go down this road to often as is, so I'll leave it at that.

I can accept steam for non critical stuff, it's good enough for that. I'd have to think about accepting it for something like Sonar.
