Hi everybody. Ones in few years I try to revise my choice of DAW because I think Cubase 5 is quite old to reflect nowadays producer needs.

I'm thinking of switching it to Ableton (for electronics) and Studio One (for rock sessions recording). But I have a few questions.

1) About Cubase macro control. I saw Ableton tutorial where Macro was dound to several operators in FM8 with relative parameters, but afaik it's impossible in Cubase 5. Is there such opportunity in Cubase 7 or S1?

When I tried S1, I found that there's no such as Cubase's drummaps, and I didn't get how to make drums parts with the piano roll (I mean it's to hard to remember what different keys responsible for). Do I need to draw all those notes and length, or there is something I missed?

Does S1 has something like
- variaudio
- time stretch
Image
- partial pitch shift
Image
- arranger track
- re-wire
- virtual keyboard in Cubase?

Is there in S1 and Ableton ability to toggle timebase of audio tracks between musical and linear? And to create tempo track?

PS: I tried few DAWs, and for me the workflow in Cubase is favorite. Dragging with middle button, windows desing, zooming, tones of preferences - I really like it. But Cubase 5 is not for electronic music. I think its automation system is horrible (in compare to Reason - best automation design ever, imho). By the way, Studio One and Ableton is the same story - once you draw automation for volume fader, than you always need to adjust automation points but not general fader (no relativity and flexibility).

PPS: Can smb point me some the greatest new features in Cubase 7 in his opinion?

Thanks for help.

I have S1 producer, so I don't know about variaudio alternative, but I know the Pro edition is built in Melodyne Essential.
S1 has a time stretch by pressing Alt while move the cursor to the end of the clip.
No arranger track like in Cubase I'm afraid.
Yes, there is a virtual keyboard, but I don't know the shortcut for it (in cubase i think it is f2, while in S1 I click few times to have it appear and use it). You need to add it for the devices, it is not there by default.
I didn't understand your last question, about toggling the timebase between "linear" and "musical". Sorry.
There is of course a Tempo track.

I'm not an experienced user of S1, so maybe some others will answer you in more details.

If you download S1 demo, you can evaluate it for 30 days. I don't know about Cubase 7 (I have switched to S1 and I don't care about Cubase anymore) and I don't know about Live (although it is an interesting host and sometimes i use the lite version of it).

Have you checked Samplitude ProX as an alternative to your other candidates? It should have everything you need, except maybe a virtual keyboard. But in terms of audio stretching etc. it is certainly one of the best DAWs around.

One of the coolest things in C7 are that you can create harmony voices on a vocal track an then work with a chord track and the pitched voices will also follow the new chords like midi tracks. This is amazing.

After you created the harmony voices , lets say sopran and bass, you can edit all 3 of them in ONE window with different colours.

Also the VST Bridge works with 32 and 64 bit plugins, S1 doesnt have a bridge. But is has Melodyne integration for things similar to VariAudio.

Ok thanks, for replys, guys.

In cubase you have opportunity to position your audio clips in certain places, and than when you change BPM you can chose if you want your audio clip stay on e.g. 65 Bar or at 1:35 second (in new place or stay where it was).

I like to mix few songs in one project, so different songs has different tempo, I can swich between tempos without project mess up and stertching audio.

Thanks, Skorpius, I have downloaded trial. Newer tried it before.

Oh, thanks, juffi, I saw such thing in FL Studio, quite great feature.

But waht about macro\quick control?
Here is video where I saw how it works, I think it's impossible in Cubase
