Charlatan Synth1 TAL-NoiseMaker Tyrell Nexus 6

Synth 1 for sure. The best general purpose free synth ever. Simple, low-CPU, bug-free.

Charlatan - too much hype for too little versatility.

NoiseMaker - amazing, but buggy. Some weird CPU peaks.

TyrellN6 - some more ten years until I have a computer powerful enough to run it with ease.

True, it is not very versatile, but sounds so sweet. :)

For the most versatile free synth, I'd vote for Oatmeal, and with the Limeflavour skin it doesn't need to hide any more.

Otherwise I like NoiseMaker and TyrellN6...

I never got the hype about Synth1, Oatmeal is much better IMO.

@BBFG#
Can you please tell me where is the direct download of TyrellN6 in U-he website?
I only found this:
"Download TyrellN6 from here: Amazona TyrellN6 V3 (go to page 3 of the German blurb, and scroll down until you see the Mac/PC file links)." in this page:
http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6
That was probably where I downloaded it from... direct enough for me. :hihi:
No magazine required.

I've made tons of sounds with Charlatan, it's addictive. It may seem limited and I'd certainly love some extra modulation options, but that doesn't stop it from being quite a versatile and great sounding synth. You've gotta love the variable sawtooth and the delicate tones it can produce.

Maybe Ultra Analog VA-1 could be added to the list?

As things are going in the market place, at rock bottom prices, I wonder if users would take it even if it was free? :hihi:

I think it would depend on the sound people continuing to have their sets available for it as well as the VA-2.
I opened the two of them and did an A/B test using the 'Angelicals' and really didn't hear any significant difference. The same is true playing it in their free Player. For programming my own sounds, VA-1 would be something I would gladly jump on for free. It's probably time for them to turn the 'Sessions' into a bundle and reduce it to almost free or completely free since Lounge Lizard is version three and UAS is basically half of VA-1.

I really wouldn't rule out Tyrell for pads at all. In fact, it's great for those gloomy, abrasive, end-of-days, cold-space-chilling pads.

Synth1 always surprises me when I load it up. The sound is really quite amazingly good, considering its age, and it is surprisingly versatile.

Charlatan - some great tones to be had. Like it for percussive and pluck sounds. Layering is the key.

I have never used Noisemaker extensively, but it does nail that retro sound quite well. It's been eclipsed by the Talunolx and talbassline, of course, but you gotta pay for those.

Why choose? They're all pretty nice in their own right. Spice is the varieté of life.

synth1 is the all around workhorse for pads and leads, but charlatan comes in a close second for its basses, team them both together and you have one hell of a dynamic duo :x
HW SYNTHS [KORG T2EX - AKAI AX80 - YAMAHA SY77 - ENSONIQ VFX]
HW MODULES [OBi M1000 - ROLAND MKS-50 - ROLAND JV880 - KURZ 1000PX]
SW [CHARLATAN - OBXD - OXE - ELEKTRO - MICROTERA - M1 - SURGE - RMiV]
DAW [ENERGY XT2/1U RACK WINXP / MAUDIO 1010LT PCI]

Ok but you can make all the basses u need from synth1 itself. Talkin about dynamic duos mine consists of synth1 and T-Force Alpha Plus.

MiniMogueVA/LUXUS(-TD) is my favorite, followed closely by Oatmeal. Synth1 would be my 3rd choice. TyrellN6 sounds sooo good (probably 4th choice), but once I activate the 8 voice unison, it uses Diva levels of CPU, so I don't use it much yet. Still, I think it's the best sounding free synth.

sure, you can make bass sounds with onepingonly as well, but it won't have the fat bottom end charlatan's oscillators have, or the snappy filter.

I have no problems with Tyrell on my system, and i'm using an ancient AMD x2 64 dual core CPU. Maybe multi thread processing was implemented in version 3? I don't know...
