Nevertheless, we have to admit that Fab(rice) Morvan really *CAN* (and does) sing pretty good!

The other guy, Rob Pilatus, unfortunately killed himself with drugs and alcohol many years ago!

(But "Frank Farian" is still one of my favorite producers! :D )

They hire a composer and a producer to make songs for them, and then they're delivering only the lyrics and the vocals. Both don't fiddle around with a DAW, some softsynths and a guitar, they still have enough money to pay the best producers out there.

There are only a few artists who compose their songs themselves - for example McCartney...

sorry tricky but for george michael this is simply not true. you shouldn't say that if you can't prove it.

You just have to look at the writer's section of the album "Patience" to see that George Michael didn't write and produce everything himself but he had a lot of helping hands...

you mention "patience" album from 2004 sorry but what i see (and know anyway) is that that most of the songs are written by him or in collab what is quite usual btw.

you should really not put michael in the same corner like madonna or "artists" of that kind. michael is/was a great songwriter.

ps. didnt writing songs (1st post from you) and didn't produce everything himself (your answer and what i never doubt btw.) are two very different things.

It's true that Madonna has more helping hands than George Michael. I've never doubted that both of them are great songwriters while Madonna is more concentrating on the lyrics, the vocals and the song structure and less on the compositions...

And let's not forget, that Madonna is a professional dancer which cannot be said from George Michael...

Here another list with credits from the album "Patience":

Here "MDNA" from Madonna to compare:

Unless I've missed out on some part of the thread that was relevant to this statement, "only a few who compose their songs themselves" is a load of nonsense.

Very few bands or artists I've listened to over the years performed songs written by other people!

Sure, some chart pop artists are using ghost writers but why listen to chart music?

Peace,
Andy.

Madonna great Songwriter?

and for your another list of the same one album "patience": somehow i have the feeling that you dont know that 99% of productions have similar amount of people on the credit list. micheals credits arent that bad on this or?

George Michael Arranger, Audio Production, Bass, Composer, Design, Drum Programming, Guitar, Guitar (Bass), Keyboards, Main Personnel, Piano, Primary Artist, Producer, Vocals

if you google now for your example mc cartney i'm afraid you'll be shocked then?

or like andy said it's simply nonsense what you talk here. i'm off..

On page 2 Tricky-Loops wrote:"Only a few artists" was a bit exaggerated, I admit. I should have written: "Most of the famous mainstream artists (like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus etc.) don't write (i. e. compose & produce) their songs themselves"! Same thing applies to most rappers.

Every artist is different, there are people who don't write any songs and people who produce everything themselves (for example Calvin Harris)...

Indeed. There are many intelligent lines in Madonna's lyrics.

You won't bring me to play off Madonna against George Michael against Paul McCartney - I'm a fan of all three.

What useful things did you write here? All you do is criticize people and to badmouth them and to make them ridiculous... I haven't seen any positive helpful post from you...

Back on topic.. The question had me thinking on it.. and I think it is an interesting question, to consider the legitimacy of purchasing and branding songs written and produced by other people.

So then I wondered how is this different from most of us who work for someone else? Our work is branded under a company name to which we get no outside credit. We were paid to do a job that the company desired.. it now belongs to the company.

Is the dividing line based around creative works in relation to a person? That is, is there a difference between having your work branded under a company name versus having your work branded under a person's name?

Another example: Imagine you're a tailor and you create a suit - would you feel the need to wear it yourself - just because YOU made it? Would you feel being a bad tailor if someone others is wearing YOUR work (i. e. the suit)?

I wouldn't see any problem in selling things - no matter if clothes, pizzas or songs - as long as the other person doesn't claim to have it made him/herself.

So there should be a contract between producer and artist that states who the author of the song is...
