Im not sure if you read my thread but i think a quick observation of energy xt and how it's midi note entry is, mixed with flstudio , and maybe some ableton midi clip examination and you'd see how t is lacking in midi. I would say work on the step sequence too as it is it's still a bit difficult to use. I'd say the biggest issue resides in the zoom dependent grid. I think notes should be entered depending on the grid zoom but shouldn't be dependent on the mousewheel zoom, if that makes sense. The octave scroll and zoom is annoying to say the least and could be made better by making it more rigid. The smooth midi clips we've got now look nice but are cumbersome .

If you take a look at S1 that is a good MIDI editor (among others).

Or give a look at Reaper (new) ME, quite nice too.

Anyway some generic things:

1- View and edit multiple items at the same time.
2- More accessible basic tools (at the very least shortcuts)
3- Tools (eg double/half tempo, transpose etc...)
4- Better looks
5- Better integration in terms of zoom and the like

Id love to have the midi clips rigid, we could have an option to fullscreen every time you choose a midi clip. itd be nice to have single clicks to add remove notes. Another idea , Grid resolution not dependent on zoom only by buttons and keyboard hotkeys. Note entry defaulting length the grid resolution .

Hi jrlanglois,

Great to get this opportunity to speak directly to the dev!

What would make T5 my much longed for and goto MIDI DAW would be:

MIDI loop recording with automatic Take generation for each iteration, combined with an easy to handle Take comping feature.

Please let me explain a bit more.

Since over 20 years, my main DAW is MOTU Performer/Digital Performer. I have (eventually) learnt a good and effective work flow when it comes to audio. I've never been quite comfortable with the DP MIDI, even though it started out as a pure MIDI recorder/editor.

Now, DP has a really cool feature set for loop recording audio, with automatic generation of a new take for every loop iteration and cool comping tools for assembling a composite from snippets of a number of takes.

But…

DP lacks the same clever features for MIDI! Instead, when looping while recording MIDI, the new MIDI events just get merged into the same take.

The thing is, I'm at best a mediocre keyboard player. I need to get into 'the flow' and I still easily make mistakes that ruin an otherwise acceptable take. If I have to stop recording each time and manually create a new take - sheesh!

So, MIDI loop recording with automatic Take generation and smart Take Comping would make T5 my close and valued friend.

Kind regards,

Joachim

being that tracktion is a sequencer lets keep working on including innovative song construction from the notes to the phrases give us as many manipulation and construction options as possible , give us a grid where we can assign our for instance a launchpad to , like a built in monome , the key imho now is midi and song construction .let us type in numbers into a list, and it creates the song pattern. Let us drag and drop entire song sections with a single click... etc If t5 goes this route i believe it can win many new users .

Post

Another idea include a rudimentary tracker option where it works like renoise. Things like this would improve the sequencer part of tracktion .

Post

if you should create a step sequencer, it would be cool, if the steps could be controlled by midi!

Thanks for the feedback everybody! All posts have been looked at, and it seems there's growing task list of things to improve and add (and remove!).

Post

I think if you guys change the midi looping, please give us the option even maybe have both options the one we have now and the other one... The more options the better...

If you do sequencing options make sure we can add remove drum grids and change the notes that trigger etc.

Also give us a tab for fullscreening midi clips, and an option when we dbl click a clip it can automatically go there?

I have a small request for the piano-widget on the left side.
More and more VST sample libraries have keyswitches for different articulations. Would it be possible to have the piano getting configurable colors and text on the keys? This would really improve the readability/editability of the midi recording dramatically...

just my 2 cents :)

I hate editing with the mouse. Add the ability to move a pointer around the grid with the arrow keys and place/choose note with space bar. Add a button to toggle this function on/off. Add the possibility to modify active note velocity and length with keys (for instance number keys for velocity, 1=10 to 9=127). Make it possible to toggle between snap to grid / quantise or free movement within the function suggested above.

Awesome ideas I'd have to add to the last one , we should have note preview sounds as an option if you did add that Feature

... and dont forget scales. as plugin or as "midi editing feature". thanks.

How would T differentiate between PLAY/STOP (default behaviour of the space bar in almost all DAWs) and selecting MIDI notes?

My only request, and the thing I think is most important:
Change the pencil behaviour to draw the notelength - not just place notes based on the length of the last note. Dear god, if you have to allow for the latter, make it a switchable option, please. I haven't used the pencil tool since the behaviour got changed in T2, because it is so useless. I've compensated by using a midi keyboard. Holding shift to increase/decrease note length from the previous note's length is just rubbish. Look at T1, look at reaper. Both get it right.
