Whatever you choose, don't forget a "qwerty keys to midi keys" type plug such as: http://www.thepiz.org/plugins/?p=midiKeyboard if it is not supported.

Doh! What about Reaper with its fully functional non-timing-out demo? It also has a great (huge) dockable virtual keyboard for mousing in midi notes.

Could be a bit VERY daunting for beginners, (I know I get turned off by all the menus, even after using the menu re-organiser thingy), but in terms of Swiss-Knife-DAW-ability it can't be beat. Should be on everyone's computer, if not as your primary DAW, then as the one that'll do the stuff your main DAW won't :D

It's expiring after 2 months. You have to pay after that to continue using it. And it's sh** for beginners anyway, sorry.

To be correct, it's not expiring, but the trial-period legally ends after that period. It will still be fully functional, as Cockos understands that wen you demo stuff, it might sit installed on your machine for a while until you get to it. However, it is most certainly NOT free software. On the other hand, it's incredibly cheaply priced for the amount of power you get.

Having said that, I totally agree that Reaper is not a beginners DAW. There are much better options there, mulab free would be one of my suggestions. Speaking of, does anyone know if Computer Muzys is still bundled with CM, that would also be a pretty viable option to start with (and can be had for the cost of one magazine, if it's still bundled that is).
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

I meant expiring in the sense that it is not legal to use anymore. :) I know, Cockos won't mind if you keep on using it, when some day you will buy a license. But one shouldn't do that, especially when they're that liberal with their demo restrictions.

Post

My bad, I must agree that Reaper isn't for beginners. I was thinking in the context of FLStudio demo vs Reaper demo, they're both very lenient... but at the same time the restrictions are different enough, and abusing Reaper's leniency is not something to encourage or endorse.

Scratch Reaper! :)

There's of course the fully free, no nag REAPER v0.999. Getting on in years now, but loads plugins and is without track limits unlike some other free DAWs.

Recommending REAPER for street kidz is like recommending a truck for a novice driver... :help:

My free Windows MIDI Sequencer, PianoRollComposer, is almost a DAW.
