Psycle is a free, Open-Source, music creation program that offers an easy way to create your own music, fast, and with high quality.

Psycle uses a classical tracker interface (a text grid of notes which are sequenced one after the other), coupled with modularity (plugins) that allow to extend the sounds that you get from it.

It supports three ways to get sound: its own native format, the VST Plugin standard, and recorded .wav samples using the sampler machine.

Notes are entered in patterns, where you can also use commands (plugin specific, or global), as well as automating parameters via the mcm and twk commands. These patterns are then organized in a linear sequence, which becomes the song order.

Main features:

  • A 64 Tracks Pattern Editor, with up to 1024 lines.
  • 256 sequence positions.
  • Audio Routing (machine) view to interconnect the virtual machines in order to apply different effects. Multi I/O for VST plugins is supported.
  • Internal Stereo Sampler unit which supports .wav, .aiff, .iff/svx, .s3i, .its files of any sampling rate, 8/16 and 24-bits, mono or stereo.
  • Modern tracker Sampler (Sampulse), with extends sampler support to .xi and .iti, and supports most of the Impulse Tracker like features, including filter.
  • 70+ Native Plugins (generators & effects), most of them open-source and with an easy to use API to create new ones.
  • Multithreaded audio engine.
  • Support for VST1 and VST2 plugin standard, including support for jBridge.
  • Imports .xm, .s3m, .it, .mod.
  • Exporting to wav, as well as recording realtime to .wav.
  • Configurable Keyboard Layout.
  • MIDI-In Support (control Psycle using a MIDI keyboard, or even a software sequencer).
  • Themes and skins support.

First off make sure you have the 2008 C++ redistributable (it comes bundled but error'd out on install...problem 1 of more than a few). Secondly there doesn't seem to be much to the built in instruments, or machines as they're called. A few simple generators and even fewer effects. Couldn't get plugins to work, they all error'd out. Not one of my plugins would load, messages like "microsoft api error: 193 0xc1: %1 is not a valid Win32 application". Nice interface but I can get plugins to work better using VST Host and not spend my time trying to decipher Microsoft based error messages.

I like this tracker a lot but is it abandoned? Hasn't been any update for more than three years...

Hello all Psycle users, .

I have updated the status of the Psycle to another post called "Speeding up Psucle development" and found from the DIY: Built it and they will come forum (direct link: https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=436412). Please look the second post (may 28th, 2021, 5:48 PM. To put it short, Psycle would need a new lead developer and the source code can still be optained from Source Forge.

Kind regards, .

Juho.

Hello all Psycle users,
The current status if that Psycle has not had official stable release in nearly 10 years and a beta update on its website or on the SourceForge website for up to six years. While I have gained a basic understanding of C++ in the Barchelor of Business Adnministration (BBA) ICT studies during the professional studies period, the Psycle project would need a strong leader (in terms of stability and regularity). Moreover, my basic understanding of C++ is limited to console applications at the moment, so it would take a bit of time to learn SVN repository technique (as I know now the one of Git only) to upload software to the main trunk tree and so on, including, also, the creation and updating of the graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Stefan Nattkemper has done a project of Psycle at SourceForge where the Psycle code is still hosted (https://sourceforge.net/projects/psycle/). According to the latest commit information (surprisingly, as I did not expect it!), the latest alpha version of Psycle is slowly taking its shape, with the current version being 1.12.5 alpha 3. It can be downloaded and installed at least on Windows at the moment. Currently, Psycle runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD and Crome OS (according to SourceForge's OS tagging), but actual support (based on the tagging of the downloads) suggests the Psycle running in Windows and Linux. It also uses the QT framerowk (the one licensed under General Public License (GPL) version 2). I wish Psycle had a strong future, and I encourage anyone to take a look at it, even though the current version si an Alpha because the Alpha is a start of something new and exciting! Finally, I would wantt to add that I am a long-time user of Psycle, so it would be good to have an official support for Windows 11 and the latest Linux cernels on it in the coming months/years.
Kind regards,
Juho Tuomainen.
