I loved his cynical take on the world. Both Wild Side and, Sweet Jane were part of my repetoire for years, when I was doing the blues/rock circuit.

Was always fairly ambiguous about Reed, but you cant deny his influence on the shape of modern music, particularly as part of VU.

RIP.

RIP Lou Reed, you made great things during your stay.

Americans don't care too much for beauty
they'll shit in a river, dump battery acid in a stream
They'll watch dead rats wash up on the beach
and complain if they can't swim

They say things are done for the majority
don't believe half of what you see and none of what you hear
It's like what my painter friend Donald said to me
"Stick a fork in their ass and turn them over, they're done"

Love the first three VUs more than just about anything, found his solo albums kind of frustrating (Transformer would be my favourite by far) but still helluva catalogue. "Songs for Drella" is my favourite of his later work, though "Like a Possum" is a truly amazing track. Kind of a shame his swansong was the metallica collab...

RIP.
Maybe if we consider this to be a better Swansong?

very beautiful and a very fitting end in many respects - peaceful and meditative music. Perhaps he finally found himself in a much better place in his later years?

Then again there is also this - which I have not heard yet but looks interesting:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stone:_Issue_Three
The Stone: Issue Three is a limited edition live album of improvised experimental music by John Zorn, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson recorded at The Stone on January 10, 2008.[1] All proceeds from the sale of this album support The Stone
Always the experimenter to the last - I guess even the Metallica thing was him wanting to try on new styles.

The stuff he did with John Cale is brilliant too - have you heard Songs for Drella?
I haven't heard that one yet, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip!

I have to admit I did not actually believe this news when I first heard it,

I thought it was a hoax.

I always thought Lou Reed was indestructable

Quite possibly. I only heard this record for the first time a few months ago, lovely stuff for sure.

Indeed, same here. Sad news anyway. Now he has all the time in the world to mend things with Andy.

Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

Wow! Just saw this..... Really sad to hear this! I got into VU by way of the Cowboy Junkies' remake of Sweet Jane. I then burrowed into the back catalog and found gem after gem. Great stuff! I really will always be moved when I hear the things "Stephanie Says"! May Lou rest in peace and his family and loved ones find comfort! :-(
