does anyone have any tips on getting nasty bass from zebra

Im wondering if anyone knows how to get some of the more crazy nasty 'noisia'esque bass from zebra.

I seem to get quite good stuff with detuned saws, but they are getting a bit old now, are there any more interesting techniques that can be used to get stuff from zebra.

any tips, or ideas of paths to expiriment down will be a big help.

Modulate sync and Phase. Use the oscillator FX section - phase distortion, warp, etc. wait for you here. Draw different wave shapes and morph through them. Get to know the XMF - there's a world of tonal variation in this module alone. Don't forget noise and FM. Drop the saws and explore other waves.

Zebra can get pretty filthy when you get the hang of these things, and you'll notice I haven't mentioned the shaper. It's Zebra's weakest part (in my opinion, of course). It can add grit, to be sure, but I don't find it incredibly convincing. Zebra desperately needs a good distortion module.

In the meantime I've had some luck using the XMF filter overdrive as a distortion effect, just leave the filter wide open. Add some subtle even harmonics with the shaper module's tube drive to make it sound "thicker."

Those dubstep type basses are basically fm with distortion and unison. Zebra does that and a lot more. There's so many things that add harmonics in zebra (fm, ringmod, sync, unison, osc fx to name a few, all can be layed and routed however you want) I find I can basically keep tweaking until I find something good.

Not exactly the most helpful solution but sometimes placing a good gritty distortion after Zebra can help you go that last 10%. Given that basses tend to be monophonic you don't have to worry about intermodulation.

Currently the best way to do distortion in Zebra is to use overdrive in XMF filters in various modes or lpf vintage2. Usual shapers indeed are quite useless in the most cases (although Wedge mode is quite similar to XMFs Folded mode and can be useful if you know how to use foldback distortion;))

also try parallel mode + filter offset

the main controls to finetune are cutoff/offset/kb track --- with resonance, filter FM and overdrive...
also try alternative dist modes and filter types.

Plenty more to be looking into, the xmf filter is getting a lot of love, I need to sit down with it and learn more, as ive not really used it much before.
