I think it is very commendable that you deal in this way. I often wish all retailers would do the same. For me, it made the decision to recently buy both Zebra 2 and Diva very easy. Not only because the products exude quality, but the regular price is realistic, affordable and feels like excellent value.

So many other virtual instrument makers put me off for having bloated prices most of the year only to drop them to half, a third or even a fifth (for bundles) at sales times. The drop in price is perceived as a good value buy when often the sales price is what it should have been all the time. It can, as you said, lead to impulse buys one might later regret as well.

I still have a lot to learn about Zebra and Diva, but they are both - in their very idiosyncratic and different ways - exactly what I've always wanted synths to be. I was seriously contemplating going for a hardware analogue synth when I discovered Diva, not being satisfied with the sounds of the virtual analogue soft synths I'd tried until then. Even a cheap hardware synth would have cost me several times the cost of Diva, so it saved me a lot and gave me an even greater sense of value for money buying it.

So, to Urs and your team: keep up the excellent work! I'm looking forward to seeing what else you come up with in future.

I think that u-he stuff is excellent value for money, and I'm a very happy customer. the support you get is second to none amongst other things.

I, too, think it is very commendable. do I wish all retailers would do the same ? well, yes and no.

u-He earned their name. but I'm not sure I would have agreed to buy things that way from ALL retailers. I guess it depends on WHO you are.

On the other hand, I guess a retailer should compensate loyal customers in some way... I hope Urs has a good plan in that direction for us...

For me it's solely because the products exude quality. Zebra is one of a kind, that range of sounds it can generate is second no none (the only synth that I have in my disposal who has so many DIFFERENT presets and sounds - is Synth1).

I'm not one of the "knowledgeable" clients but I'm still able to use Zebra to generate the same emotions that made me go "WOW" while watching one of the closing scenes in "Inception".

After all, that's what this is all about, no ?...

Urs wrote:Well, as I see it there are two general philosophies:

1. Do sales, but then also charge for upgrades.

2. Don't do sales and keep cost of ownership at a minimum.

I believe that 1. is by far the most common principle in the market, and I think it's unfair to many existing users (there'll always be a cheaper price next week or so). It implies a hidden cost on everyone because the bucks saved will have to be spent later - or by someone else. Yet, no-one pays more for upgrades if he bought cheaper. We would go this way if we were in the gambling business.

Instead we stubbornly go the second way. We favour existing customers over fast growth.

I believe that sales lead to "unhappy impulse buys" - people buy because it's cheap, not because they want/need what they buy. I believe that marketing tactics based on quick growth create an unhappy user base. I think that sales are the root cause of shitstorms that some companies regularly receive.

Now look at our customer base. U-he users IMHO are loyal, knowledgable about the stuff and happy above average. I believe that our no sales policy is part of the reason why we have such a great community. Nevertheless, we could certainly give back more, so we're working on a scheme to reward existing users (e.g. value vouchers or freebees) but I can't yet say what/when/how.

But what it boils down to is, we've been doing very well this way. From a plain business point of view, there's no need for us to do sales, go retail, milk customers, lower prices. We much rather concentrate on making our products better, and offer irresistable value for, well, a pretty good price.

That's all I needed to read Urs, I'm glad you treat your current owners so well.

I recently saw the pricing you had for Zebra 3, and it was very reasonable.

I now own ACE after buying it from the marketplace, so I'll just patiently wait for a good deal on Zebra 2 and Diva.

The opposite is waves, where (i hope) nobody pays the full price, because most plugins are on a huge sale every second month.

The U-HE way to sell the plugins cheaper only for early adopters is great way. You buy a plugin when you need/want it and you didnt have to wait for the next sale.

A general discount for loyal customers would be nice. Fabfilter i.e. are discounting their products depending on the plugins you already own.

Yeah I was just about to say, I really like how FabFilter sets up their pricing.

The more products you own from them, the bigger the discount.

Loyal customers already get compensation... in the form of great service and free updates. IMO there is no need for more on top of that

Of course everyone always wants something cheaper... but let's compare (and this is not a 'who is better' comparison)

Fabfilter Twin shipped at the end of 2005 (8 years ago)... in that time there have been 5 updates (+ minor bug fixes), one of which (twin 2) cost money

Zebra 2 was also first available at the end of 2005 (8 years ago)... and in that time there have been 5 updates (+ minor bug fixes) and no additional cost.

Again, this is not a who is better, but rather a comparison of how the different companies offer value. The lack of any upgrade cost for Zebra during 8 years IS the loyalty discount for customers.

Fabfilter does it one way, U-he does it another, but they both already do it.

Well, this thing applies to EVERY synth is existence.

Look, I own Zebra, ACE, SATIN and probably would not be able to resist the urge to buy DIVA when it goes 1.3 official (initially, I wasn't too impressed... I know the quality at hand but I'm more of a "yikes ! what's THAT sound ?!" type of a guy. and that reaction was constantly coming from Zebra. a few weeks ago I was playing with the new beta of DIVA, chose a random bass patch and sequenced it with one of my MIDI sequencers - I think it was with with WOK's CLOCKWOrK. I was like "what the h.3.l.l is THAT ?! :o :-o ". and, well, that was it. it was game over for me).

Look, I respect Urs' strategies... I guess that if I feel that I'm NOT being "ripped off" it does say something about his integrity.
I have now in my disposal almost all u-He's synths : Podolski, Zebra, Zebralette, TyrellN6 V3, Zebra|CM, Triple Cheese, ltmLabs (everything that I could lay my hand on, from the "Sound and Recording" site. and, and said earlier - will probably buy DIVA too (not sure about Bazille... don't want to catch the bacteria ... )

The Dino coupon was good enough for me. I actually haven't turned on that dino since I got Z2HZ either.

Bottom line: U-He is my favorite company to do business with. Oh and yeah, they also make the best synths. Unbeatable combination.

I bought most U-he products at the reduced start-off price (Ace, Diva, Satin) except for Zebra2 which I got through the 'dinosaur upgrade'. The latter gives you a really fair price for an amazing synth, plus excellent customer care and significant free updates.

The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.
