I guess for now, you're right about EDM being where the money is (with the huge exception of cinematic music). I wonder how long that will last. Maybe quite a while, as it is probably the easiest kind of music, along with hip-hop, for the money people to commoditize.

Gonna have to side with Andy on this one. To me it seems silly to utterly reject 4-4/4OTF, whatever abbreviation you want to use...
I mean, it seems the same as saying you don't want to date a woman that's over 130 pounds and is black but still call yourself not racist.

On a side note; pop music has made a slight shift away with Dubstep coming on the pop-music scene.

I rather embrace a good made 4-to-the-floor song that makes me want to dance than a bad experimental song with unpredictable beat that changes every few seconds only to be pretentious...

I am amazed how you all discuss this with no consideration about what is on top of the rhythm. FTTF as four bd beats on 1, 5, 9 and 13 exists in many genres may it be folkmusic, rock, techno or dance. Does this mean that if you reject/embrace it, it is with regard to all musical contexts in which it is used?

Yes (with very few exceptions), if dominates for the entire song. It is the rhythmic equivalent of an email using all caps.

I think 4 on the floor is a very very quick and easy rhythm for everyone to catch on to which is why it is so popular.

Giorgio moroder talks about the 4 on the floor beat around 2:20

Had a collegue who observed gorillas. One of the thing that surprised him was that they apparently have a kind of musical culture. Sometimes the silverback would spontanously grap a stick and start hitting it against wood on the ground rhythmically. Whenever he did that, his troops would start walking around him making all kind of gestures and screams until he stopped the hits. I have no doubt myself that FTTF reflects the most primal rhythm of all and may have been more signficant for the development of our abilities to social coordination than we think. If not embraced, it should at least be respected IMO.

I thought of that old trick to get babies to sleep-
putting a clock that ticks in their room.
I don't think I just made that up hehe

The first comment I made,
for sure it does make synth melodies and harmonies gel,
so unifying the sound,
but what it can do for me is make your head start nodding,
where the lines don't.
I can fully understand the need for a more complex beat
some are calling for, but I don't tire of the steady kick.

Another steady pulse in EDM is the psy dugga dugga,
I think it's a Bassline usually.

I'm an embracer, as a dancer when I was younger.
You can move to the other stuff going on in the music too,
if the stomp gets old.

I don't really reject it in any sense, it's become so it doesn't irk me at all,
just as a metronome doesn't.
