Unlike today, most music was made back then in studios that you couldn't possibly afford. Also, the "bedroom" composer back in the day got by but at a price. I used to take HOURS to bounce and edit usually between two things.

I'm for new/shiny. Baring technical difficulties, I can now do anything, at very high speeds and I'm happy about that. I don't want to labor over something just to save a few bucks.

That's a good point.

Even a decade ago when I owned my XP-30, I would have to rerecord my tracks over and over again because the audio would regularly get screwed up for one reason or another.

Software is a clunky mess with zero quality control.

As a result, the gear becomes unreliable.

It's also a supremely oversaturated market.

You put these three together, and you accumulate a ton of gear, but none of it's very good, leading to GAS.

The gear being unreliable means it can interrupt workflow.

For example: Last night I had to render a track I made with GPO more than 27 times. 27 @#$% TIMES.

Why?

Because GPO 2e (the version I use - I know, it's old) has all kinds of bugs with its volume levels, and opening up too many instances (regardless of whether or not my CPU was only hitting 13%.

Then we come to places like KVR to talk about GAS and we're regularly bombarded by all sorts of advertisements of new things that promise to be better than the garbage we already own, which is quite clearly garbage.

I can't speak for stuff like Reaktor or anything like that - I don't like those types of synths. I'm referring more to romplers and the like, which are not very well represented in the market at all.

It's the same thing that's happening in the games industry. Quality control is down, market saturation is up. Leading to a lot of unhappy customers.

Music and game software are potentially and rapidly approaching another 1982 video game crash.

I play video games to chill/distract myself/escape/etc.

But you know what that has turned into?

GAS (GAME Acquisition Syndrome)

BTW: games truly are an *excellent* diversion as well as a great time waster; Right now in our area Best Buy is selling the 3ds XL Dream Team bundle for $180. And Target will price match. Wally's World of Woe (Walmart) will too.

Actually I think I rather have SAS (sale addiction syndrome). I buy gear immediately once it is on sale.

A good cure for GAS is to dedicate yourself to learning your instrument. It's sometimes easy to lose sight of the playing aspect of the instrument and focus on the new, bright, shiny things.

Same here. Its hard to resist when you see a plugin go on sale that you've had your eye on for ages......and even though you know you don't need it, its still too tempting to pass up.

It's true. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get yet another IK purchase that I do not "need" because of the price. I demoed the "british" stuff and though it's the buss comp I like best, 25 bucks more to get those two channels is just too tempting. The gates are good and I use a TON of amp sims that don't have good gates (or any at all) so it's a worthy cause.
