How about fixed-size signal meters

Dunno about you folks, but I'd like to see fixed-size signal meters at the end of every track.

Having them different sizes depending on how many other filters are on the track makes mixing a little more difficult as it's more work on the eyes to scan and find and interpret them.

Same thing for volume/pan filters.

I love the idea of being able to change their position within the chain, but maybe we could just add additional filters for that, and leave the original "full track" volume/pan and signal meter filters alone, in a fixed state.

Be gentle. I'm trying to think of ways to make mixing easier without actually introducing a mixer. :D

You could always resize the filter area to make it bigger... but I agree, this would be nice.

Another option I've advocated before is to use a metering plugin (like PSP vintage meter, or something more streamlined), place it strategically and lock it.

Here's a little toy some of you might like to play with:

make a rack:

add to it some arbitrary number of inputs (for arguments sake, lets say 8 stereo pairs.

From each stereo pair, wire in series at the far right hand side of the rack -- I'll explain why later -- one vol pan control followed by a level meter.

When done you should have eight vol pans all vertically aligned, and eight meters all vertically aligned. Now route all of the outputs into the rack's stereo outs.

Plonk the rack on any tracks on which you want some degree of mixer functionality, and route the track to which ever "mixer channel" you want it to go to.

Now when you are mixing down you can simply open the rack and mix a group of tracks without having to worry about resizi9ng clips.

More fun you can do with this:=

remember you can view two racks simultaneously, so it is perfectly possible to have the right hand rack be a master mixer, and the left hand be one of a number of sub buss mixers (ie have a mixer for all your drum parts that feeds into a single line in on your master mixer).

The reason why I suggest pushing all your filters to teh far right is that this leaves you easy room for inserting eq and compression on any tracks that desire it.

Thanks -- very interesting ideas, I'll give that a try. I wonder if any latency is added though -- I hear racks introduce it...

I would have never thought of that... NICE!:D

They do, but at mix down time, latency is much less of a concern.
