Another pan/volume idea... thing.

First off, I totally ripped the 'base' image from Multree in his 'Bodylizer Looks Great in Tracktion!' post. Thanks for unknowingly let me kind of massacre it, half-assedly.

Secondly, the idea is that this plugin (more of a feature or Tracktion Native plugin) would take the selected Tracktion vol/pan filters and display them on the screen as little dots and stalks (corresponding, the stalks would go behind the dots) and the dots would go from Left to Right. This way you could quickly (and visually) set up volume levels and pan amounts for a ton of instruments in a badass visual method.

To select a particular 'dot', you'd click on it. On the left side it would display the track name that the vol/pan plugin that is being altered resided on. I don't have a clue how it would really be implimented, but a visual vol/pan interface would rock many pairs of socks. Below is a 3 minute quick mock-up of the plugin interface (no, I didn't put alot of time in to the artwork... as you can tell, I barely even touched Mult's original image. Hell, I didn't even draw in the stalks... I started on a roll and... yeah. Someone else can do it 10 times better :D)

Cheers.

a mixer by any other name... :D

nah, not a bad idea for roughing out your 'soundscape' (beats the 'hardware' model hands down).

have you seen the mixer in ... that french sequencer. :) Intuitive?

looks like an old flight sim, big blocks for each track that you can drag around in 3d. Fun but not very clear...

maybe the dots could have the color of (and change that accordingly to) the represented tracks / clips....

and on mouse over they say which track they belong to....

just make a whole tab-screen out of this and things will be not that cluttered....... seems like an idea to think about

What french sequencer? I would like to take a look...

Do you know this book:

it took a bit of finding but it (IntuitiveMX) is here:

Looks interesting though lacks send/return routing (heard that somewhere before... :D)

Back on topic... you could have the coloured centres of the 'dots' pulse in relation to signal level, easily 'see' which is the kick track for instance. :)

Yep, I have that book...the greatest piece of writing on the art and science of mixing I've ever read.

The author of the boox patented his method for visual mixing so any such development should consider this and might infridge the patent or have to license it...

US Patents number 6,490,359 and 5,812,688 (original and continuation)

Mergh... Patents seem to quell any attempt at innovation in software these days.

Actually, don't have time to read the patent - how specific is it?

I didn't read it either (have to read some other boring patents at work :( ) but if its specific like the book is then its specific enough. I will read it only if I want to develop such a thing...

BTW In the book itself the visuals are nice but not that helping once you got the general idea, its seems to me more like a gimmick. But maybe it will be a good thing if it existed, what do you think?
