Are MuLabs built in presets, instruments, are they more efficient than 3rd party VST's? I'll wager the answer is yes, but I want to hear it from the horse's mouth.

I have a rickety, underpowered computer, (at least for a DAW)..so I need to be efficient because I am (relatively) poor.

Do you have a particular preset and comparable (i.e. implementing the same features with the same algorithm) VST in mind? Without two concrete examples to compare, it's not really a question that can be answered.

--Edit--
The other part of the equation, of course, is not the VST or preset processes -- it's the connections between the parts involved. You could ask "does a VST stacking sequentially 1000 low pass filters that work just like the MUX module take more or less CPU than 1000 MUX low pass filters wired sequentially?" In that case, you're clearly asking how efficient the wiring is, rather than the modules involved.

I guess the "simple" answer is that it's complicated and you end up comparing apples with oranges most of the time. For greatest efficiency, start with nothing and only add what's needed. MUX makes that very easy, of course.

If I have 2 apples, 2 oranges and 2 bananas how many pears do I have :)

Each plug-in is different, whether it is internal or external. So the fact that one uses an internal of external plug-in cannot be because of a global comparison between internal and external plug-ins. Each case have to be considered. Ir is a question of adequation (suitability) between each plug-in and the precise use for which one have thought of it.

In the term plug-in I include here the presets also, as you compare both in your title.

And also, the term "efficient" is a term which can be only relative to a precise purpose since something may be efficient for the needs of someone but inefficient (or not enough) for the needs of someone else. So this term depends not only of the object itself but also of the person who uses it.

And at last, the concept of efficiency is also variable along the time. Something which answers perfectly to the need of someone may answer less (or even no more at all) one or two years later to the same person.
