T 5 - Working with Audioclips

hi,
at the moment, i play around with tracktion to get myself used to its workflow.
i have worked for years in samplitude and i am looking for a DAW to do audiowork in Mac osx. I am not really convinced by reaper, nor mixbus.

so i decided to give tracktion a spin last fall and and upgraded my old t2 licence to tracktion 4. it mainly was to contribute to further development, as t4 was not really workable for me.
now i am overall pleased by the design and features of tracktion 5. thanks for that!

But there is one thing that leaves me scratching my head and that is working with audioclips after recording.

what i really miss is:
- a way to group clips to treat them as one clip after assembling some cuts (no i don't want to render!)
- a fast and easy way to mark a portion of an audioclip to copy/insert it somewhere else. the existing way with placing the I/O markers is a bit too complicated in my view. something like the swipe-marking from the comping-function would do a great job. just swipe inside the clip - copy - set playcursor to desired place - insert

these two options alone would speed up workflow immensely.
there could be some more options with audioclips like "healing splits" (without rendering) when they still resemble the underlying audiofile (not moved, just split) and a renderingbutton for audioclips in the parameter window, where you can just render the selected clip/clips to a new clip, which is then placed right on the track on position (by default in 32bit/same samplerate as original file).

maybe i am just too spoiled by samplitudes elaborate object-editing (clips = objects in samplitude) , but i think in this regard tracktion can step up easily a bit.

all the best to the developer(s) and the company and i hope for a bright future of tracktion. the start is promising

a quick additional thought for the swipe marking in audioclips:
only make the upper half of the clip "swipeable", so choosing clips/setting playcursor can still be done in the lower half of it.

to make it even better:
setting playcursor/swipe-marking in the upper half and choosing clip/grab-moving clip in the lower half.
so we do not need to find the little bar on top of the clip for moving it around.

quick is a matter of perspective.
you can place the I/O markers and then copy that segment from a clip.
so it would be mouseclick+keyshortcut then mouseclick+keyshortcut, then copy.

yeah I've been playing with it - way too clunky, which is a shame as a lot of the other aspects of Tracktion are great - but making those sorts of rapid edits and dragging them around is something I do a lot. Bummer, looks like Reaper is still the one.

Workaround:
When you want to group a bunch of audiofiles: create new track and place 1 empty midi clip at the same timeline as your audiofiles. Then folder this track together with the audio track. Now you can work with the folder clip: copy, split and drag around.

Sounds like you would be more in the market for Logic then.

Cant seem to find a windows equivalent.

And is there really no right-click menu with a 'paste' option on a track? Im stuck with just CTRL-V?

Also wanted on the right-click menu, equivalents for 'i' and 'o' for marking start/end points. That's along with a means of just dragging the mouse to define selection start and end a la ProTools.

Yeah; again, Im used to this with ProTools, and find it useful.

with the contextmenus there is still some work to do. in many cases they are not really "contextual"(or what i think is contextual) or leave things out, that would make sense.
another example: i rightclick in the markertrack and ... nothing, no contextmenu. i have to move the mouse to the markerobject in the upper right corner and drag that in.
this is great by itself, but it would make good sense to have that in a contextmenu also.
